I'd think most addicted gamblers who lost all their money except for $100k would use that $100k to win their money back.

Very strange because to the outside world he really seemed to have his shit together. Good business man, earned pilot license, good career, 64 years old without ever getting in trouble with the law. Its not like he just one day snapped and lost and went on a rampage. He had been premeditating this one for a long time. And put a lot of time, effort, and money into this attack.
I think he was just a gun fanatic. He collected them. I doubt he bought them for this -- or at least not most of them.

When people shoot off most of their bankroll, it can make them miserable to the point to where they can't enjoy anything else -- even if they still have enough to live on.

It is possible that big losses made him feel foolish and suicidal, and then he decided to go out this way.

I still haven't seen proof that he was wealthy. Even if he "owned" various properties, it's possible they were all underwater, or he had business partners who put up most of the $.
