Many liberals are dismissed with any gun-control-related ideas because too many of them have a ridiculous, idealistic view that ALL guns should be confiscated from all regular citizens. That would simply never work in this country. There are so many guns in existence here that such a law would leave the guns in the hands of the criminals and embolden them to invade the homes and businesses of average citizens, knowing they are much less likely to get shot.

Anyone who argues for complete gun control in the US at this point is a fool. Even Barry owns a gun.

This is correct. Another reason a complete ban of guns would not work is because such a draconian law would be unconstitutional.

Hundreds of years ago, it was wise to allow citizens to arm themselves with firepower equivalent to that of the military, as the political situation was not well established and people rightfully feared a takeover by tyrannical forces.

Today is much different, for several reasons. No matter what weapons you have at your disposal, there's no way you're going to be able to put together a group of citizens to successfully fight off the US government. While many people today hate the government, the chance that we become ruled by a brutal dictatorship at this point is very small (especially in our lifetimes), and the chance of fighting off such a dictatorship through a grassroots army is even smaller.

Bottom line: There is just no reason for regular citizens to own such high-powered weaponry.

This argument is a red herring. Today there is no significant domestic movement interested in matching the fire power of the US military. I dismiss the radical fringe wackos, nut jobs and drug cartels because if they ever intended such an assault on the government (as has happened in Mexico), they would increase their arsenals through illegal black market purchases.

Perhaps you meant assault rifles when you wrote 'high-powered weaponry'. That is an issue that could fill a multiple page thread. I would just caution that almost every piece of federal gun ban legislation has at its core the goal to completely ban guns. This is an area of legislative activity where citizens' Second Amendment rights will be best protected by a vigorous gun owners' lobby working with Congress to enact any reasonable restrictions to 'high-powered weaponry'.

I also feel uncomfortable about conceal/carry permits because they allow hotheaded-but-normally-law-abiding citizens to kill people in the heat of the moment.

Look at George Zimmerman. I don't believe that he has the heart of a killer. He was carrying a gun around, confronted what he truly believed to be a thug in his neighborhood, the kid stood up to him, and he panicked and shot the kid. We don't know all of the details with what actually happened, but it was probably pretty close to that. George Zimmerman's life was never actually in danger, even if he felt it was.

Your summary of the Trayvon Martin incident is not supported by the facts and evidence made available to the public.

Martin confronted Zimmerman. Martin assaulted Zimmerman. One witness has already stated this plus there is the 911 call that clearly reveals Zimmerman's cries for help. Then there is George Zimmerman's interview with the police and Sean Hannity.

Your story about what happened is not supported by any evidence. For you to say it probably went down 'pretty close to that' is conjecture, guesswork.

There is compelling evidence that Zimmerman's life was in danger. There is a witness who saw Martin assault Zimmerman. There is the 911 call revealing Zimmerman's screams for help. There are the medical records and photographs of Zimmerman's injuries. There is Zimmerman's story.

Even though conceal/carry permits allow average citizens to occasionally stop crimes in progress that would otherwise have gone unhindered, I believe they will ultimately cause more problems than they solve.

You may believe that but you are wrong.

The most respected research done on this subject was John R. Lott Jr.'s More Guns, Less Crime: Understanding Crime and Gun Control Laws

Even the most ardent anti-gun activists have never been able to refute Lott's research and findings that the more guns law abiding citizens have, the less violent crime there is.

It's required reading for folks on both sides of this debate.

You can't be posting the need for common sense laws regarding guns/ammo and still claim right wing cred. NRA would of given you some talking points about the Colorado shootings, like it would of been prevented if many members in the crowd had guns to shoot the gunmen or they'll bankroll your opponent next election cycle. As far as the right to bear arms. I guess L.A. Shootout, Columbine, Virginia Tech, University of Texas all could have been prevented.

It is there to protect us from foreign and domestic terror. If I was in that theater, or even one of those cops he ran in to, I would have shot him down. We should put guys like this guy in an arena and let the families of the victims decide how these pieces of shit should die. Use gate sales and pay per view. Then split all the proceeds between the survivors and the families of the deceased.

Almost all theaters have exit doors in them. They are not "emergency only" exits, so no they would have no alarm when opened.

I just happen to agree with the Republican side more often.

I actually decided this completely on my own at the age of 12. I watched a talk show where the host was conservative and his guests were liberal (and both sides had a chance to state their points), and most of hte time I agreed with the conservative.
