    certainly the country would be different, those in charge know that and thus this country does not encourage participation as other countries do...

    the most extreme example i know of is Austrailia, where if you do not vote you are fined $95....voter turn out there is well over 96%

    if indeed voting was required in the US, you would see a country with far better medical and old age benefits, higher taxes and far less defense spending

    this country has a few things to prevent the vicissitudes of current popular politics from quickly changing our law....things like the electoral college, staggered senate elections, lifetime terms for supreme court justices, pre-election day registration for voting and the bill of rights...some of these things are good...others not so imho
