Need Landlord/Manager Advice from Druff - Got a Mold Problem

Figured Druff would know what to do... and anyone else who wants to jump in and give suggestions.

Oregon is obviously a very moldy place and living in an apartment that is probably older than Druff will mean a chance of mold, so it is expected.

My roommate started noticing mold problems in her room around October, she contacted the manager and she merely said to open the window, turn the fan on, and keep stuff away from the walls. My roommate had agreed to opening the window, despite the fact that we're too cheap to turn the heat on (until recently) and it being below freezing.

Today, she noticed mold behind her bookshelf below the window. It's grody, but most importantly a huge health concern. Coincidentally, she has been having a cough for a few months and she went to the eye doctor today and, sure enough, they were wondering what was going on with her eyes. Could be a coincidence or we're just thinking hypochondria-tic thoughts right now.

Anyways, we did take pics (I'll post them here later) and we'll contact the manager in the morning again so that she can expect it. Then we will probably contact the "free" campus lawyer and see if they have any ideas of what to do.

So, what would you do? Who would you contact?

When I was in college we had an extreme mosquito problem because we were at the side of the West part of the lake. So the wind blew those fuckers over. It sucked.

A couple months later (before west Nile) my friend "collapsed" due to headaches from mosquitoes in front of people in the complex. One rent check later, best part of the lake.

$695 for 2 bedroom. It's an awesome apartment and I've been extremely happy with the size and the distance from campus, just this mold is awful

With no lease or any rental agreement, your choices are to either move, or press the landlord for a more proactive solution. Convince them that controlling this mold problem asap is in their best interests as well. It shouldn't be hard because it is in their best interests to get it handled. They are gonna have to deal with it sometime. Convince them that NOW is better than later. For your health AND for their bottom line.

Hmm... I'll look into the rental agreement tomorrow morning to see what it says. I remember reading through it all, but barely remember what any of it said. The lease is over and they don't require it to be renewed, but the agreement should still be in effect (I think).

You contact the landlord. Make sure you document everything too. If he doesn't fix it within a reasonable amount of time, then stop paying rent. You can sue for unsafe living conditions.

You can't just bust out an I'm sueing out of the blue with no warning for shit and giggles. You needed to document complaints that never were acted on before any legal action. Don't get sue crazy, especially at a young age.
