I don't agree with this idea but it's nothing new. The Catholic Church going back to the middle ages had jubilee years every 7 years where all debts were erased, no matter what they were and to whom they were owed. You wouldn't call the medieval Catholic Church a bunch of crazy leftists.
I think the better idea is to provide a program to support people who are temporarily unable to pay for their homes on a case by case basis. I thought that's what all of these emergency relief programs were for.
