Like I said, it is all fine and good for us to believe strongly in our social mores, and to defend them. But we need to have some perspective how new and original our ideas on what constitutes pedophilia and age of consent are.

By the textbook definition of pedophilia, having sexual relations with any post pubescent person isn't pedophilia at all. Now it is true that this is not the way we use the term in our common parlance, but I hope there are some non ideologues who can wrap their mind around the idea the way we view pedophilia is novel and radical. I am not even criticizing our current thinking and saying it is wrong, I am just saying it is very new and radical idea from a historical perspective.

How is this hypocritical? Elderly evangelical Christians from the South may have different notions about what was considered "moral" behavior in the 1970s (and today too for that matter) than you or me, but they are pretty consistent.

I am sure most of those people would be much more upset if they found out Moore had jungle fever when he was in his 30s, than that he courted white teenagers.

As I have said before, I don't think any of the moral outrage going on right now is coming from a very sincere place. I thought the exact same thing when the Limbaugh crowd was going after Bill Clinton relentlessly during his presidency and right after for his affairs.

The age of consent in France is 15, as specified by Article 227-25 of the Penal Code, which reads: "The fact of the commission without violence, constraint, threat or surprise of a sexual offence by an adult on the person of a minor under fifteen years of age is punished by five years' imprisonment and a fine of €75,000."

Article 227-22 prohibits the "organisation by an adult of meetings involving indecent exposure or sexual relations knowing that minors are present or participating". (Minors refers to under 18s; the text of the article can be subject to interpretation).

Article 227-22-1 prohibits the "soliciting of a minor under the age of fifteen, or a person pretending to be such minor, for sexual purposes through the use of a computer system".

Article 227-27 prohibits sexual relations with minors over age 15 (aged 15, 16 or 17) "1° where they are committed by an ascendant or by any other person having a legal or factual authority over the victim; 2° where they are committed by a person abusing the authority conferred by his functions."
