I believe Marty on this but both sides are likely correct. He probably makes about 30 bucks an hour but when he is out to sea he is probably working 80 hour weeks with some overtime pay. After a month or two he likely has significant time off. As great as union is they are not going to likely allow him to work much more than 2000 hours per year unless he gets a side job (which he very well may have).

The fact that he doesn't have a home or any real expenses makes significant time away from shore even that more desirable. He should have significant money saved after a year of doing this.
