Speaking of Scherzer, its nuts to think about how he'll finish no higher than 4th in the NL CY Young voting, after going 14-12 with a 2.79 ERA, a 0.918 WHIP, and 276/34 K/BB in 228 IP. Oh and 2 no-hitters. But he's still CLEARLY behind the other big 3, if not others.

Just as recently as 2006, Brandon Webb won the award after going 16-8 with a 3.10 ERA, 178/50 in 235 innings.

Strike Zone must have changed and pitchers are being rewarded. Look at how many guys struck out 200 batters this year and look at how low some of these ERA and whip numbers are. All the while you still have a shitload of guys hitting 30+ and some more hitting 40+

I want to see the Cubs beat the Pirates for a few reasons:

1) The Dodgers have just had all kinds of trouble against Pittsburgh this year.

2) The Cubs probably have the better chance of beating the Cardinals right now, who have given the Dodgers fits over the last few years.

3) The Cubs and Cardinals are likely to have a tiring, stressful series, which I think will take its toll on both teams, thus making it easier on the Dodgers if they reach the NLCS.

I think a bigger strike zone definitely plays a part, but the most recent discoveries/usage of advanced analytics have really favored pitchers and defense. Teams are shifting more than ever before, and every team is doing it now to varying degrees. While the BABIP numbers have only gone down slightly with shifts, extreme pull hitters are trying to counter them by altering their swing to try to slap it the other way, leading to more strikeouts. Pitching coaches using info on specific pitch stats, and then altering the "gameplan" for a pitcher to throw 'x' pitch a higher or lower percent of the time has also been huge. Look at any recent example of a career journeyman who all of a sudden got leaps and bounds better, check their fangraph page, I can almost guarantee they drastically altered their percentages on a couple of pitches they throw.

More and more teams seem to be buying into defensive stats as well, and showing much more of a tendency to play a weak bat/great glove up the middle as opposed to the opposite.

So yeah, its a lot more than the simple casual fan response of "no more roids".

I agree.. Clint is already coaching scared. Sean Rodriguez starting LOL.. Pirates are a great team but flawed most errors by any team and you can run all day on them. Have to hope Jackie is to pumped up and chokes tonight. Pirates get out of this game they will beat the Cards Willie!!
