I can't see any circumstances where special forces would be used as security at a large sporting event. Or any event for that matter. It doesn't make any sense. Even if it does happen, it certainly isn't common. Shit like this is way below what they are trained/used for.
Just like police in training are used to direct traffic at construction sites the trainees for some of the elite divisions of the army will be sent to large public gatherings. If they are in uniform they are there for the purposes of making the place appear secure. If there was a credible threat they would be there but you wouldn`t see them.
You are correct, domestic situations unless at a time of war are not Special Forces. It is CIA/FBI/NSA/DARPA and specific high level entities within each. Much of it you wouldnt know about, by design.
That is not to say Special Forces missions couldn't happen here, the odds are just low as they have there hands full with wars over seas. The CIA/FBI have all the resources necessary. Essentially the equivalent of Special Forces/Delta Force, just domestically focused and with a different chain of command than the military.
Also what is that picture of above. That wire out of his ear could be an undercover agent with a wired ear piece for communication, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Not to mention he is fit, clean cut and looks much more like an agent, than a bomb dropper.

I have met active duty special forces out and about, but only became aware of what they were because someone made me aware that knew them personally. They generally look more average guy, or runner rather than rambo. In 40+ years, I don't think I have seen one advertise it outside possibly a military funeral, or maybe a wedding if they're wearing their dress uniform with some insignia or something. I am sure military guys here might recognize a tattoo or patch, but I don't think they are advertising much as a deterrent. I am far from a military expert, but I don't think you are seeing active duty special forces protecting sporting events. I think it's very likely some private contractor, who is likely comprised of ex-military personnel, but not active duty guys. I have a guy who graduated with me who worked for blackwater and he wore their shit all the time at the gym, but he was retired from the military, and was never a special forces guy either to my knowledge. Like I said, I am no expert, but it seems like some aren't understanding the distinction between private contractors, gov't agencies, and active duty military special forces members. I would be shocked to see the latter used in this capacity. I know we have ex-military guys here who can probably straighten it out, and it's possible I'm wrong, but it would surprise me.
Was me who mentioned Navy Seals and you replied that forces of that ilk would be at every big event such as a marathon. You did actually strongly imply that.
You even found it funny that I wouldn't already believe this.
Comparing a FED to a Navy Seal is like comparing an apple to an orange.
UPDATE: Numerous Injuries Reported In West Fertilizer Plant Explosion
WACO (April 17, 2013)—Emergency crews from throughout Central Texas responded Wednesday night after a major explosion at a burning fertilizer plant in West north of Waco.
West firefighters were dispatched to the plant earlier in the evening after an earlier fire rekindled.
The explosion was reported at around 7:50 p.m. in a frantic radio call from the scene of the fire at West Fertilizer at 1471 Jerry Mashek Dr. just off Interstate 35.
Numerous injuries were reported and multiple ambulances were requested.
Several buildings were reported destroyed and a nearby nursing home was damaged.
There were reports that people were trapped in the nursing home and in an apartment building.
Scanner traffic indicated that some residents of both the nursing home and apartment building were severely injured.
Children are among the victims, according to reports from the scene.
Department of Public Safety troopers transported some victims to hospitals in patrol cars, said Gayle Scarbrough at the DPS Communications Center in Waco.
A triage area was established at the intersection of Haven and North Reagan Streets, but it was later moved to Marable Street and Meadow Drive because of the potentially toxic smoke from the fire.
Six helicopters were en route to West and were landing at the baseball field on Tokio Road, south of town, said Gayle Scarbrough, Department of Public Safety Communications in Waco.
A number of buildings were reported to be burning, some in residential areas and evacuations were underway

(CNN) -- An arrest has been made in connection with possibly contaminated letters sent to President Obama and Sen. Roger Wicker, the Department of Justice said Wednesday.
Paul Kevin Curtis was arrested by the FBI at his home in Corinth, Mississippi, the department said in a statement.
Discovered Tuesday, the letters were addressed to Wicker, a Mississippi Republican, and to Obama. The justice department release said a third letter was sent to a Mississippi justice official.
The letters to Wicker and Obama were stopped at a government mail-screening facility after initial tests indicated the presence of the deadly poison ricin.
