Yeah this is a bizarre trade.

I can tell you from watching Vargas for a few years that he just doesn't seem to be on the trajectory of a successful MLB player.

He has an OPS of .658 and despite crushing the minors, he's just one of those guys who can't seem to get his skills to translate over to the big leagues.

Edman has been solid in his career and is only 29. He hasn't played in 2024 due to a broken wrist and sprained ankle. Whether any of that affects his hitting or speed remains to be seen. But he's low risk, as he's not making a ton of money, and the Dodgers didn't give up a lot for him.

Erick Fedde was lousy until this year. Somehow he's been quite good with the White Sox, but is it going to last? His 4.92/1.433 numbers make me think no.

About time the Jays got something valuable while dumping this year, although they wouldn't full out re-build by moving Guerrero Jr or Bichette.

IMO they need to dump Schneider and/or the front office.

The thing with Fedde, though, is it is quite conceivable that these results hold. He probably got a real pitching coach for the first time ever in Korea, of all places. The Nationals system is, uh, not exactly known for player development. Neither are the White Sox.

He added the sweeper last year overseas. Fedde won't ever win with pure stuff, but this version of him can be a #3 on a playoff team.

They’ll never dump Vlad agreed. Fatty found his swing though and is hot af on a hit streak. I almost took him for a HR today.

    Bichette is presently worthless.

Rookie Michael Busch with a +100 boost (+475’ish?) when lineups and pitchers are confirmed. Reds prolly roll out a rag tag collection of bullpen misfits to feast on.

An hour left but lol at that trade. Twins grabbed a mop-up reliever for a non-prospect I think simply to avoid stories of them being the only team to not make a trade.

At least we acquired the 2nd best pitcher named "Trevor" who used to pitch for the Marlins traded today

Flaherty to Dodgers. Very un-Friedman-like trade too. THE FACT FRIEDMAN DID ANYTHING AT ALL AT THE TRADE DEADLINE IS ATYPICAL these past many years. It is win now for this older crew.

Glasnow, Flaherty & Yammy then some random like Stone, Kershaw or River Ryan? Not bad.

Mark Prior will fuck Flaherty up though. Let’s see

You still have Playoff Dave Roberts to overcome but they may get out of first round this year.

I am shocked. Maybe into silence.

The consensus from my friends and the majority is they want Trader AJ Preller gone, and he might be if we miss the playoffs. One guy just went on a FB rant of not going for the name starting pitcher(Crochet or possibly bring Snelll back).
I like the moves personally and don’t mind what AJ has done. The thinking is he has traded away a future All Star team to get the guys we have(or had Soto). This franchise is thirsty for any success and the win over the Dodgers in the playoffs in 2022 is the only thing we have this century and that doesn’t happen without the trades. Plus as good as Mackenzie Gores stuff is he’s a hothead and not that good imo. CJ Abrams, and James Wood might hurt in a few years.

I saw on ESPN today Pads are -175 to make playoffs. That seems high but I’m a scarred SD sports fan.

I do think Padres make the playoffs. Actually a better team than their record shows.

Dodgers almost did nothing (aside from the Edman trade), but were taking it down to the wire regarding Flaherty or Crochet. They settled for Flaherty.

Crochet has more upside. Flaherty might be more durable.

Flaherty has had a great year, but keep in mind he sucked big time in 2022 and 2023, so I've always felt he's a few bad starts away from regressing to those prior years. Coming into this year, I thought he was done.

Interesting how the Giants decided they were sellers. Soler to the Braves could be really big. That team is really circling the drain, but this could be the kick in the ass they needed.

I’m not prone to buying lottery tickets. That’s more Daly’s thing. Nevertheless, earlier this year I did buy various Padres playoff futures including World Series at some crazy 5 figure number. They have a good tournament lineup. Bad character and lousy clubhouse, however. Such is life.

Orioles unloaded half their clip, and I dunno how much better they are? Anyone scared of Eflin or Rogers as a playoff starter? I doubt it.

New ownership should be shoving all-in on a Burnes extension.

Seemed like classic Baltimore shit, just dipping toes in the water when they could have dived in. No other team could beat them for a Skubal, etc....

Good lord, Dave Roberts had a Binden brain lockup at the end of the game. Mark Prior had just gone to the mound and soon afterwards Roberts leaves the dugout and heads out onto the field. Roberts reminded me of Biden on the White House lawn without Jill

Dodgers should have been required to remove the pitcher but instead the umpires charged Dodgers a game delay and awarded the Padres a ball.

I’ve been thinking Dave doesn’t look good. Maybe he just looks old and burned out.

Anyway, Dodgers bullpen allows Padres to come back from down 5-0. (Padres bullpen is top of league stuff too)

    Final 6-5 Padres

oh, oh, oh I skipped the headline

Rumor has it NYY passed on Flaherty due to physical (injury) concerns. Back. Recent cortisone shots and missed starts.

Everyone was crowing about the miraculous cheap price Dodgers paid for Flaherty. Well …..

Kershaw will let up at least one bomb off his sub 90’s fastball or similar junk.

Padres bullpen is so deep and Dodgers bullpen is hot garbage so the Padres are not necessarily a fade with Cease.

San as a New Englander I imagine you are familiar with Bill Simmons NFL playoff gambling manifesto (never bet on a rookie QB, bet on dome teams in cold weather, bet against the no one believes in us teams etc.) so as someone who has enjoyed your anti-Kershaw betting takes I can’t help but laugh at the fact that you overruled your own rule due to some new gambling take du jour and got burned by betting on your boy Kershaw.

I don’t find humor in you losing a bet, just the fact that a man’s got a code and you abandoned your own code and well, Kershaw has his first start in his entire career (424 starts) where he didn’t record a single strike out.

The reason stupidity wagering expired was the complete lack of dialogue. Love the critical analysis. Love you but not gay.

    -Sweet Emotion

I have heard so little of Bill Simmons over the years. . I never watched a complete Celtics game this year. For $100 I couldn’t name the starting 5 of the championship lineup. I hate the NBA now. The past two years I have completely given up on the NFL (flag football) too. NHL has become my passion. I watch every night during the season. I waste far too much time but I love the game.

Bill Simmons is talented. Love his style and admire his accomplishment. I love “The Rewatchables”, for instance. Just can’t share his enthusiasm for the NBA &. NFL.

So never heard his manifesto but I get it.

To be clear, I was targeting Padres Cease with those bets. Even the lowly Dodgers should eke out 2 runs against a guy who just pitched 114 in a high leverage game. WRONG. Cease was fantastic. That dude can locate his stuff like a boss. Druff is correct though as concerned normie pitchers. We will still bet that concept.

Cease proved something last night and I paid to learn. Mid game I bought Padres to win division +1000. By game end it was +850. I need to stop betting Padres. I have enough.

So I targeted Cease but I also faded Kershaw and Dodgers. This is still sanlmar.

    Kershaw covered this himself.

I was reading the chatter from young Dodgers bettors (losers) last night and their scorn for Kershaw. I wanna tell them about the Golden Age. Playoff Kershaw would be just words to them. They can never fully appreciate the joy of the past decade plus.

Dodgers are in complete disarray. It’s August and they have no idea what their lineup will be except for catcher and first base. Lux air mailing the ball over the the first baseman’s head on a routine play. Friedman is so stubborn. I could go on and on. Don’t get me started on the preseason 109 wins. lol.

My code is intact but the Dodgers and Kershaw never test it tbf.
