The man shot today in Minnesota,
Philando Castile, was a cafeteria worker for the J.J. Hill Montessori School in St. Paul for 12 to 15 years. He had no active current criminal record (he only had a misdemeanor case for not having insurance; he was also booked once for driving after revocation). He also had a Concealed Carry Permit for his firearm, which is actually quite common in most neighborhoods in the Midwest and South where crime is high and where protection is needed from the actual "thugs" you speak of.

He (Alton Sterling) apparently had a gun in his waistband, after someone had actually reported him to 911 for using the gun to intimidate someone.
According to the store owner below, the call of a man creating a disturbance was not referring to Sterling, but a homeless person who had asked both for money and was upset when they told him to screw.
