I googled "greatest trilogies of all time" and the first two results both have LOTR as #1. Didn't even keep going. Not quite sure WTF limitles is talking about.

The original star wars trilogy fucked up with Return of the Jedi. The most recent Batman Trilogy was terrific but I don't think anywhere near Godfather and LOTR.

edit - are the godfather movies somehow not a trilogy? In all the lists I'm pulling up of greatest trilogies of all time it's not on any. LOTR is always #1.

Godfather is definitely a trilogy, though the 3rd one drags it waaaaaay down. I'd rank the original Star Wars/Indiana Jones/Toy Story/Alien/Back to the Future trilogies above LOTR for the simple fact that LOTR was a book so the stories were already mapped out. It was hard watching them when I already knew what was going to happen. Though I still think they are great movies.
