How could it ever backfire? They've already got worldwide publicity for paying out on bets they were expecting to pay out on anyway, and if Trump wins, they'll get twice as much when they pay those bets off. PaddyPower does publicity shit like this all the time. If a game ends weird because of an extra shitty ref's call, they pay off both sides, and get articles written about them all around the world.
They probably realized that they didn't have a huge amount wagered on Trump yet, or less than their ad budget for the next few months wagered, anyway.

Putin isnt shitting his pants that Hillary will win. Trump simply represents a huge opportunity for Putin, like literally an unprecedented one. Hillary winning = the status quo, nothing more or less.
The single concern I have is that more and more Russian's security forces are slipping the collar and engaging in their own autonomous cold wars. So the possibility that Putin will reach some sort of accord with Hilldawg only to have his own people fuck it up behind his back is very, very real.
