ill confess to going down the rabbit hole on this on youtube sometimes tons of weird disappearances and deaths but if its not the algae then is 100% one of the strangest ive seen

Carbon dioxide, rather than carbon monoxide?
In Mammoth Lakes, which isn't too far from Hite Cove as the crow flies, there are areas where large amounts of CO2 come out of the ground, due to volcanic activity.
This can kill a human being (and animals) quickly. A 58-year-old man died there from massiv carbon dioxide exposure in 1998.

Indeed, when I visited Horseshoe Lake (in Mammoth) some years ago, I saw a sign warning about the carbon dioxide risk.
Maybe there's some sort of geological activity there which they previous didn't know about, and it belched out a bunch of CO2, killing them?
Not likely, but perhaps possible.

The first thing that really struck me about this story was the question of "Who the fuck takes a baby for a hike in 107 degree weather?" Thats borderline child abuse.
But speaking of the weather, I'm guessing that will likely be the biggest underlying condition with the deaths. Probably was the algae, but if it was November and 58 degrees they probably make it out. When you are bordering on heat stroke, I would imagine that the effects of any poison you ingest would be amplified.

Never understood this hiking and camping mindset. I went camping once in my life. Three days, couples. After getting bit by mosquitoes and shitting in the woods someone made a comment that camping was paradise. LOL, fuck off. It sucked.

I work in small to midsize cannabis grows that are sealed up, and sometimes the PPMs on the CO2 meter get up to 4200. I wonder what kind of PPMs of CO2 you need to kill a human. Yikes.

This means the average concentration over an 8-hour period should not exceed 10,000 ppm and the average concentration over a 15 minute period should not exceed 30,000 ppm. It is unusual to find such continuously high levels indoors and extremely rare in non-industrial workplaces. These standards were developed for healthy working adults and may not be appropriate for sensitive populations, such as children and the elderly. MDH is not aware of lower standards developed for the general public that would be protective of sensitive individuals.

Agree camping is faggot; I do it out of necessity when on multi-day trips but hate it, just can't sleep at all.
I get like 10 Xanax per year for flying and usually just take when camping to sleep and be more comfortable.
It's basically paying a lot of money for gear that won't make you comfortable to live like a homeless person or Bottomset's babymomma when the bill isn't paid. Horrible.
