for a while we had a kind of a secret but in plain view thread dedicated to day trading and such but ultimately it was rebranded and a lot of this sites culture war elements rushed in with a lot of hot takes and suddenly the signal to noise ratio went apeshit and the quality of discourse never really recovered.
whats more, this community's implicit antagonism made for a poor pairing with the sorts of inevitable losses that come with trading. i wanted a place that was safe to win / lose / learn at so i built one and i moderate it according to those principles.
the others involved shared my enthusiasm for that vision once they saw what i was up to. thomas was actually already participating in other finance / sosh media projects, as it happens. so we realized there was a real opportunity here and rolled with it.
with the market gaining the sort of popularity that it has, with fintwit blowing up and just social media going wild over it in general, having a blank-slate start without this site's lower half of the emotional intelligence bell curve dragging it relentlessly into toxic entropy was the only real way to bring new voices into the conversation. for better or worse, this site is what it is. recently ive been spending time in other finance flavored communities. and honestly sometimes when i tab over to this forum and catch up on some of the content here, i want to never stop vomiting. having a place where i can put my feet up and rant about bernanke and yellen while bouncing investment ideas off people? thats my fucking jam right now. aint no one at stockamets crying about the plight of the endangered white man or railing against the tyranny of face masks, not on my fuckin watch.
obviously, there has been a really unfortunate period where, by virtue of the current user base being largely comprised of PFA posters who want to join me on this 'getting stupid fucking wealthy on advantage trading' flavored journey, we see a lot of familiar threads / names / posts. as i discussed with druff last night, its lovely to see people share my enthusiasm but really, in exactly zero ways did i envision the site becoming Flying Stupidity II, and no one involved has any interest in pursuing that as a goal. its a place to discuss trading strats, learn, brag about what we are buying for our wives boyfriends, commiserate over life altering losses, and kibitz a bit when the market is choppy and our PDT strikes are used up.
