My son has a concentration limit of about 90 minutes-2 hours a day and that is it and I don't want to waste it on low productivity stuff. Instead I am spending that time drilling math and reading comprehension into him, mostly with materials I ordered myself. He is just going to have to do without all the other shit, which is mostly just time wasting as far as I can tell.

Reading comprehension is hard to measure, but math knowledge is easier, and I guarantee he is getting more out of 45 minutes a day with me than he was getting at school.

The socializing part sucks though and I definitely think it is in his (and my) best interests to go back to school ASAP, although I am pessimistic it will be this August. I could see them keeping schools shut down longer.
Some advice handed down to me by two academics I had the fortune of interacting with in graduate school:

    1) From one of my Ph.D. advisors who was Korean and specialized in econometrics (and with whom I published some scholarly articles on econometrics when I was fiddling around in that career): To maximize your son’s ability to learn math, get him into the habit of making written copies of what he should remember. Because, as that math-geeky econometrics professor said to each of his graduate students in first semester course in his subject, “The hand will remember what the eye will forget”. I later used that method to recall the significant findings of over 150 research papers, all organized within various topics in the major, when taking (and acing) my second-year comprehensive exam.

    2) From Eugene Fama (use the Google machine to learn his credentials), who once guest-lectured my class of grad school cohorts one semester when in town giving a presentation on a working paper: When reading math terms, equations, etc., in a problem, equation, text, remember that math is a language and say every symbol as a word, as well as all of the terms and numbers shown with it. Don’t just look at it and skip pronouncing it, even if only in your head. That vastly improves one’s ability to comprehend what the math symbols are intended to communicate.

I don't have any particular insight on vaccination theory. I understand some of the problems with Coronaviruses, which include but is not limited to:

    1. Single stranded RNA virus, so mutates easily.
    2. Covid infects lung epithelial cells, which don't have very much immune exposure, as you actually don't really want a lot of immune cells roaming around your lungs, because lung inflammation is generally bad news.

--In order for an effective vaccine you really have to hope that there are some antigenic sequences which cannot mutate without the virus losing its efficacy, and that is kinda asking a lot for an RNA virus. And on top of this you have to hope you can develop a memory immune response that can target the lungs without fucking them up from inflammation. My understanding is monkey tests with some other coronavirus vaccine (I forgot which one) hit a wall because the immune response was causing so much lung damage from inflammation.

--I still think that something that could be a game changer which is a lot more feasible in a short timeline, is developing some sort of hand held device to measure the presence of Covid antigens. Imagine everyone could test themselves for Covid every morning and have the results sent to some central database through their smart phone, or every building required a Covid check to let you through the doors. It really wouldn't require any major technological leaps to get there. Just someone creatively putting together technology that is already commercially available.

--Also, FWIW generally coronaviruses are very mild in their natural hosts. This includes all 4 coronaviruses that are already endemic to humans. There are some evolutionary/game theory reasons for this. Healthy people generally transmit respiratory diseases a lot better than sick ones. There is a real possibility the virus itself naturally mutates to become milder. And of course humans themselves could evolve, as people more prone to serious disease die out. But who knows how long this might take. Could take years/decades/centuries.

Facebook don;t chrge most peopole either. Neither does google, generally.

they already make a shit ton of money on subscriptions alone. Their potential revenue to data hoarders and/or ad show-ers is off the scale.

it has a lot of bad press. christians used it in china to attend mass and their shitty server security leaked the calls and the government rounded them up and killed them, that kinda stuff.

also its just profoundly poorly written, google wont allow it on their systems, everyone is styling on them right and left, and they just banned using it for orgies.

so yeah fuck a zoom honestly.

I hope you're right but when HIV was first identified they also said "18 months to a vaccine."
