I wonder what the Pacific coast states (CA, OR, WA) are gonna do if everyone else just says fuck it. They are all taking this pretty seriously and having pretty good results so far, all things considered. But short of closing state borders, if the virus is going full jihad everywhere else, gonna be an exercise in futility.
i'm just worried that we're postponing this till we get a vaccine, which won't be for a year or 18 months. i'm not feeling a 50% unemployment rate in the meantime

Clearly he didn't think it was a hoax, but rather that it was a real thing which would resolve quickly on its own (which obviously was incorrect).

what we actually mean by, "trump thought it was a hoax," is that he didn't think the coronavirus was *truly* a danger he needed to be concerned about.
he didn't think it would pose ANY threat to americans or the economy.
in fact, he thought the *alleged* danger was completely made up by the democrats and the media, with the sole goal being to tank his re-election chances.
this is the literal definition of a hoax.

This is a very fair point. The purpose of the quarantine was never to outlast the virus but people seem to be forgetting this. The purpose was to buy time and more importantly not overwhelm the health care system like what happened in Italy.
Its perfectly valid to explore re opening the economy. The problem is the discourse around it is horrible and Trump is incapable of committing to any action that he could be held responsible for. He's incapable of bringing the nation together and his haphazard statements only cause anger, panic, or resentment towards others.
