I actually did like George H.W. Bush, though I liked him a little bit less after he broke the "Read my lips, no new taxes" promise, and then when he remained in too much denial about the early '90s recession (both of which cost him the election in 1992).
Poppy Bush deserves a heap of respect for politically biting the financial system bullet that caused the early ‘90s recession: Pushing through the banking reforms that halted the S&L crisis that Team Reagan punted on for at least 3 years. It caused bank lending to contract for awhile, but it laid the economic groundwork for the economy to recover and do well shortly after Clinton ended up taking office (which later he opportunistically took credit for bringing about).
What about his criticism of the civil rights act? He said a lot of bad stuff.

However, breaking the no new tax promise was to correct thing to given the financial crisis and was the correct thing to do for America
