Poker pro Rich Alati attempting to survive in a completely dark room with no electronic devices for 30 days -- as a $100k prop bet

This has been a hot topic in poker circles for the past week, but hasn't been discussed out here yet.

Poker pro Rory Young has bet fellow pro Rich Alati $100k that Alati won't be able to survive 30 days in a completely dark room with no light and no electronics.

    Here's the details: https://www.cardschat.com/news/poker...prop-bet-74781

There will be ample toiletries, as well as a bed, shower, refrigerator (with no light), and bathtub in the room.

He gets ample food, but is not allowed to consume any drugs or alcohol. He cannot interact with any other human beings in any way, and does not have a clock, so he will have no idea how long he's been in the room, and how much longer he has until it's over.

If he can complete the 30 days without bailing out, he will get $100k from Young. Otherwise, he owes Young $100k.

This is a lot tougher than it might appear at first. Living in complete darkness can take a serious psychological toll, as can the complete lack of human interaction. If he had electronics (to where he could spend the 30 days just on the web), then this would be an easy bet to win. Even I could pull that off (well, maybe once my anxiety and depression got better). But 30 days in complete darkness WITHOUT electronics, light, or human interaction? GTFO

There also won't be any kind of intellectual stimulation. He can't read or do anything else to keep his mind active, aside from thinking and talking to himself.

The lack of clock is also huge. The bet would become considerably easier if you had a clock and got to the 20 day mark or so, and could then look forward to the end and count down the time left, reassuring yourself that it will soon be over.

Here he will have no idea if he's on Day 20 or Day 8. Brutal.

The bet came to be when they had a discussion at Bellagio while playing heads up, regarding how long one could survive in complete darkness and isolation.

The bet has been going on since something like November 23.

Someone on 2+2 claims they saw Rich Alati on the list for 25/50 PLO at Bellagio today, which if true, would mean he already quit. However, it's possible that guy was mistaken.

If he has a bathtub available, one could have researched and tested estimating water flow from a near trickle to fill up a tub as a somewhat accurate, potentially reasonably accurate, clock. But yeah, no light = going crazy soon.

I think the idea of having a clock or some facsimile would be no benefit and perhaps a negative.
The no light factor will make it hard to tell how much rice pudding is left and when to change underwear.

All jokes aside this guy better have some history with meditation or he'll be banging at the door in under a week

I don't think most people could handle no light and no mental stimulation for more than a few days when they are doing so completely voluntarily. I doubt anyone has thought of my clock idea, and I can't come up with another way of doing so, so I'm saying the money as a motivator probably does put the over under on this right at a week.

Thinking of how to make a clock with a bathtub = practice with either one's own cup or something like a large Coke from McDonald's which you know you would be allowed to request. Large McDonald's cup = 32ozs. Practice setting the water flow to a mental count of 60 seconds to fill until perfected without a stopwatch, this would = 1 gallon every 4 minutes, standard tub = 80 gallons volume. Tub is full in roughly 5 hours and 20 minutes. It may be possible to get a steady measurable flow even slower to prevent from having to monitor it as often obviously - just an example.

don't know if im not understanding the water fill thing, which is a great idea in theory but what are you supposed to do when you are sleeping?

the whole in the dark thing sucks, but honestly for $100K I think if you knew how long you had to go in this bet you might be able to mindfuck yourself well enough that you wouldn't go nuts...

You've heard of solitary confinement in prison right?
At it's worst you get an hour a day in the open air/sunshine, you have interaction with guards however pathetic that might be and it is now considered cruel and unusual punishment leading to psychological disorder.
This prop bet is solitary confinement on steroids

I'm pretty sure halving that water flow would be possible, meaning unless one sleeps over 10 hours at a time it's no problem, but the point is that anything one can gauge time by is likely the difference in sanity and insanity. It allows a calculable end, even with errors along the way.

i went to a college where it was forbidden to paint dorm rooms black.

because a certain percentage of people would wake up and become disoriented and essentially lost/insane in them.

30 days sounds like this guys going to suffer irrevocable damage and still tap out.

yeah that's what I thought...zero chance you are surviving if you cant gauge time in some form...

im probably dismissing the no light thing a bit too much...if this guy didn't see a shrink before he made this bet he's a fucking moron...

Without knowing how much time he has left he will tap out.

He likely would regardless but I agree the timing will go so slow not knowing how far along he is that he's going to go nuts since the only thing he can really do to entertain himself is fap.

Looking at it again with a less tired mind, it is absolutely atrocious.

Would red it myself if I had a dupe.

Exactly what I was thinking. There is so much upside for Young it's absolutely ridiculous. What was Alati even thinking?

I'd toss in $ in a heartbeat saying he never makes it. I bet there are probably tons more in sidebets floating around everywhere between people than the original bet.

The first thing I thought of when I heard about this bet is ex-con Jim Quillen's story (watched it on The History Channel) about when he was housed in Alcatraz. He's actually even mentioned in the op article. After hearing his story, remember the fact that he was only in it for 19 days and still had a sense of time as well as 20 minute bursts of light during meals.

    https://www.telegraph.co.uk/men/thin...-Alcatraz.html

In this edited extract from his forthcoming book, Jim Quillen describes what it was like to spend 19 days in 'the hole', Alcatraz's dreaded solitary confinement cell ...

A day in the hole was like an eternity. The day would start at 6:30am when the lights were turned on and a nerve-jangling bell was rung. This was soon followed by a guard unlocking the solid outer soundproof door and shouting for you to stand up. A short time later, a tray was passed through to you. This was your morning meal.

Although one received the same food as the normal prisoners, it was all dumped together in an unappetising lump. Bread was buried in the oatmeal, prunes dumped on top, and no milk or sugar was allotted. A cup of coffee completed the meal.

After approximately twenty minutes your tray was collected. You would be instructed to roll up your bedding and set in the three-foot space separating the inner and outer doors. The guard would open a metal peep slot and watch until you complied. Once you were back inside the inner door, it was relocked and the lights were turned off, leaving you in total darkness for the remainder of the day, except for meals.

There was nothing in the cell except a metal bed frame, a toilet, a sink, and you. There was total silence. It was also very cold, because of the limited clothing you were allowed. Inmates were given a pair of shorts, socks, and coveralls. These were inadequate to keep one warm, because the steel walls and floor of the cell retained the cold.

Worse than being cold, though, was the feeling of total isolation from the world. Being unable to see or hear is an awful experience for someone who has no physical impairment. Since total silence and darkness were to be my constant companions for twenty-four hours of each day of solitary confinement, it was imperative to find a way to keep my mind occupied. I invented a game simply to retain my sanity. I would tear a button from my coveralls, then fling it into the air, turn around in circles several times, and, with my eyes closed, get on the floor on my hands and knees and search for the button. When it was found, I would repeat the routine, over and over until I was exhausted, or my knees were so sore I could not continue.

When I could no longer hunt the button, I would pace back and forth between the toilet and the door. I would continue these routines until evening, but if it weren't for the interruption of meals, it would have been easy to confuse night and day.

After the evening meal, the bedding was returned and I would hope to fall asleep quickly. Nineteen consecutive days was the maximum time an inmate could be confined in solitary. If he behaved, he was not usually returned. If he still persisted in creating a problem, he was taken out, fed, allowed to brush his teeth, and then returned for another nineteen days.

    Usually, nineteen days were sufficient.

I served my nineteen days and was moved into regular segregation. The days seemed endless. Because of the lack of activity, it was so easy to fall into a state of depression, brought about by our natural instinct to think back to better times of the past.

Nothing could blot out the knowledge of what and where you were, or the certainty that this was all that life held for you. Man was never intended to live as a caged animal; I often speculated as to whether life was worth living under these conditions.

Being young, I had never sympathised with those who went insane or committed suicide, especially because of a situation they themselves had created. I had always lived by the philosophy that if one played the game, he must be willing to pay the price. Segregation and isolation were beginning to make me realise, however, that while these macho ideals were easy to maintain when there was hope, it was far more difficult to cope with the undesirable and traumatic world of reality once hope was gone.

This was brought home to me with great clarity when an inmate of D Block, shortly after my release from the hole, calmly found a way to slash the major arteries in his wrists and elbows. He lay down on his bed, covered himself with a blanket, and bled to death. He had found his escape.

It is a release that is much easier to contemplate than to bring to actuality. Our natural instincts are to survive, and only after reaching the very bitter depths of despair can we bring it to this final conclusion. At Alcatraz, suicide was not an infrequent state of mind, and was often prevented only by tight security and the lack of a means to accomplish it.

Look at the guy, he looks like he's lived his entire life in a darkened room.

    Easy win.

Also, necessity is the mother of invention. When you're in that spot, your other senses will be super-peaked.

You can hear distant traffic / planes flying = likely daytime and if it's super quiet = likely 4am. Unless your in an echo chamber you'll be able to hear some external sounds.

    EDIT:

Also the fridge is a big plus. It will be on a thermostat and you can likely work out early on roughly how often it cycles between running and off. Also you can get a cold can out of the fridge and you know it will take about about an hour to get to room temperature. I'm sure if you're there you can think up tons of other stuff (like the bath running trick), how many times you piss/shit etc, even how your hair / nails grow etc. Plenty of tricks.

He's a poker pro and he took this bet at even money? Wow. The only slim tiny remote chance this could possibly be +EV for him would have to be due to publicity somehow....and even then, I don't really see that being +EV.

No way is he going to last 30 days staying sane. Only chance of winning is if he actually goes psychotic and just thinks the darkness is the new "normal", but no amount of money is worth that.

I ain't read none articles about this, but how are they going to make sure he's still alive? Is there a "well being clause" or some shit that means they can terminate the bet if they think it's doing incredible harm to him?

Edit: Smart thinking @Vaughn about the bath tub and calculating/estimating time.
