Thread: I have a medical condition which will be tough to treat, and it means the end of radio (for now)

    CT Scans do have a lot of radiation and some of the concern is justified.

    However, getting them sparingly, especially being male, isn't a very high risk.

    I'm confused. Where does the best help money can buy come into play? This is something you and others have touted for the American health system. Sounds to me like you're getting the run around from different doctors and delay after delay doing so.

    I am happy, I hope it gets you closer to answers. My brother had gi issues for over a year, he would not listen to our advice about seeking medical help. 5 years ago he was lifeflighted to an area hospital and had emergency surgery to remove a giant tumor wrapped around his aorta causing a dissecting aneurysm. Miracle he survived and he has fought many other tumors since. I always wish there was something we could have done earlier.

    Okay dude. Have you ever had an endoscopy? No? I have. It's not invasive. I went to work thirty minutes after I woke up. Test took 15 minutes. Guy put a camera down my throat, told me I had hietal hernia and nothing else. Personally I was disappointed since I was having swallowing problems at the time and was hoping for something else. Turned out it was anxiety. Anxiety has come up a lot in these posts. As of now you had a doctor who said you had LPR because there was some irritation in your throat two months ago and a doctor who told you to fuck off and get off the internet because it's making you nuts. I'm with the second guy.

    Now it turns out you're in an online discussion group for LPR sufferers and we're not even convinced you have the damn thing.

    "Hi, I'm Todd and I have LPR. I think" Man you must be a hit at dinner parties.

    Barium swallow test, gimme a break. And of course you feel the need to bitch about the prep.

    No offense but I'm not sure how many radio listeners are logging on to read about the trials and tribulations of Druff's maybe throat problems or certain anxiety disorder. I listened to your last show and you sounded exactly the same as every other show I listened to.

    Winter's coming. Get that anxiety figured out.

    Not trolling in this post but I want you to know you have LPR 100%. That is all. You had a doctor tell you it was in your head, that's a red flag to me. Regardless of how you personally felt I'm assuming the guy at least examined your throat. I'd be shocked if he hadn't. You lost a crap load of weight in a short period of time. That's alarming. That's either anxiety or something else much terrible then anxiety and you need to figure out which one. I'm still going with anxiety is your number one issue and BCR agrees and that guy knows his shit. Gimmick agrees and he knows his shit. Kilgore agrees and she knows her shit.

    That's all I'm saying. If you want to get pissed off at me then get pissed off I don't give a fuck. Just figure out what you have and get help to fix it. As of now you maybe have LPR and def have anxiety.

    2nd doctor was in the first ENT group as the first doctor, but in a different office.

    They squeezed me in at 4:40pm on a Friday.

    Dude wanted to go home.

    Then he looked at his schedule and asked, "Who is this patient?" Receptionist explained they sent me there because the other office couldn't see me that day. "He was just seen last week. Why's he here?", the guy asked. "I don't know," replied the receptionist.

    I knew I was going to have a shitty visit as soon as I overheard that.

    The guy didn't even examine me beyond a quick look into my mouth (with no equipment other than a light), which tells you nothing as far as LPR is concerned.

    Pretty much tuned out everything I said and kept repeating, "It's just anxiety" and, "The other doctor didn't see anything."

    I then told him the other doctor told me he saw LPR, so he frustratedly went back to the computer, looked at my notes, and sheepishly conceded, "Well yeah, I guess he saw some redness in there."

    Then he just told me to keep taking the Nexium. When I told him the Nexium was giving me bad side effects, he said, "Okay, then get off of it. Up to you."

    When I asked about Gaviscon, he said he hadn't heard of it before and couldn't comment. LOL

    Totally useless visit, and typical of bad doctors nowadays who are either lazy, overbooked, or overly dismissive.


    The first doctor wasn't as bad, but was nearly 70 years old and was far too by-the-numbers and stuck in the past for my taste. He did use the laryngoscope (see post #1 in the thread) and put it down my throat, and he was the one who said I had LPR.

    But he also just told me to take Nexium for two weeks, to cut down on acidic food, and that the LPR would be better within 2-4 weeks.

    Turned out he was treating LPR in a way which has since been proven ineffective in studies.

    Unfortunately, because LPR is poorly understood, a lot of ENTs (especially older ones) will just default to treating it the same way they do GERD, which doesn't work, and in fact can cause other problems.

    I don't know how many doctors you've been to lifetime, but you need to advocate for your own health. You need to run a sanity check on everything you're told, and do your own research.

    I agree that you can't be your own doctor by using the internet, and that attempting to do so will just spin you up into a panic, because basically every symptom you have is always a symptom of something else much more serious.

    At the same time, doctors aren't all-knowing and infallible. There are tons of crap doctors out there, and there are other doctors who aren't necessarily crap, but flub it big time when you deviate from their narrow area of expertise. And then there are conditions like LPR which are so poorly studied that there's no consensus as to what is right and wrong, so you really have to be careful.

    As I said, if the endoscopy would be very useful in solving the LPR, I'd get it. But it's usually not.

    I may have told this story before, but I'll tell it again, because it does involve a case of "google doctoring" (though there was no google back then).

    The year was 1998.

    I was 26 years old.

    I was in bed and touched my right testicle. I wasn't jerking off, I think I was adjusting my underwear or something. Then I felt it. There was a big protrusion from under the skin, coming out of the testicle.

    I thought, "WTF is this?!", and kept feeling it, almost in denial that this was really there.

    But yes, there was a real mass coming out of my right testicle, enough to easily feel it through the skin.

    My first reaction: "This has to be something bad. I can't imagine where this isn't a big deal."

    I had a steady girlfriend the prior 2 years, so I figured it wasn't an STD.

    I went onto my computer and searched for information on this condition. I think I used Infoseek.

    Anyway, I was led to websites about testicular cancer. Everything matched up. Even the age matched up. I had thought testicular cancer happened to old people, but in reality, mid-20s was the most common age to get it.

    Then I looked at what that meant.

    "The prognosis for survival of testicular cancer is fairly good", it read. "The disease only kills about 10% diagnosed with it."

    10%?! 10%?!

    I was 26 years old. 10% chance of dying soon sounded horrible.

    I went into the bathroom and threw up.

    The next day I made a doctor's appointment with a gruff-but-well-regarded older urologist in the area.

    The waiting room was full of old men who were there to get Viagra prescriptions.

    I went in, explained my concern, and he examined me.

    "It's not cancer," he said.

    "But I read that..."

    He cut me off.

    "It's not cancer. I know testicular cancer, and that's not it. It's a cyst. It's harmless. I'm going to give you some anti-inflammatory medication, which should probably make it shrink back down. Something must have irritated it, making it swell like this."

    He then had the tech in the office do an ultrasound.

    He looked at he results, and said, "Just like I said, it's a cyst. Here's a prescription. Nothing further to do."

    I asked what I should do if it didn't go down.

    "Nothing. Surgery would possibly ruin your fertility. If it flares up, just come back and I'll get you more anti-inflammatory. That's it."


    It never flared up again. After it went down, I couldn't even find it again. Somewhere on my right ball, there's still a cyst, but it's harmless and you can't tell it's there.


    It was at that moment that I learned never to panic too much from anything I read on the internet. It looked like I had testicular cancer. Turned out not only didn't I have it, but it took the doctor a few seconds to see that I didn't.

    I trusted that doctor because everything made sense. He knew what testicular cancer looked and felt like. He used an ultrasound to verify his assumption anyway, and it backed him up. There was nothing further to worry about. He was right, and the internet was wrong.

    This is different. This is something difficult to understand, diagnose, and treat. LPR requires a lot of self vigilance and self advocacy if you ever want to see it get better. And even then, you may never solve it.

    You come off like a six year old boy looking for his mommy to make it all go away. So while I can see your frustrations with me and others . You will get zero sympathy from people who have had to endure much worse and never complain about it or give details of simple procedures step by step on a POKER forum.
