This is all very much true, but on the other side of the coin a 30+ year spell of voting status quo needed to be broken at some point. The central left/right parties had became too comfortable in doing nothing for most of their constituents. When at worst their punishment for failing was trading voters between each other not a whole lot was happening.

Almost all of the progress in the long term had been on the social side of things while the economic side had stayed stagnant. It doesn't really matter if everyone is equal if most of us are worth nothing. Now i personally think that voting for Trump, Brexit and 20 odd populist parties around Europe is gamble we didn't need to take just to send message, but it does work if it's kept contained.

The actual policies are mostly awful and we already know most of it won't work. If we go by the logic, that something resembling the sales speech is supposed to happen. If we assume it's just a bamboozle play to benefit a tiny fraction of the population, then we know it works just fine. In the short term the elite isn't hurt at all, but by hurting the career politicians there's some hope in the long run the score will be evened just a tiny bit.

A random economist i like and mostly agree with...



...from a non biased source, that for their credit lets anyone speak as long as they think they support their fucked up view of the world. Populism and racism likely grow from the same place rather than one causing the other. In countries where there is a reasonable populist left choice it also seems to resonate with the people that have been shafted in the long run.

first, intellectually, he does not understand the difference between russian meddling and collusion. when people say the russian meddled in our election, he thinks they are accusing trump of colluding with them. i don't think he understands the word collusion.

next, he is mentally ill and the most thin-skinned person on the planet. he refuses to accept that the russians hacked the dnc among other things, because some people might think he wouldn't have won without such help. he does not want to be remembered like this in history.
