You're Australian, right? I understand you have a parliamentary system so in theory it is possible for someone to become prime minister even if their party's candidates receive an overall minority of the votes cast, but it isn't very likely. Suppose in one of your elections, one candidate got 3 million votes more than the other. Who would take office? Would 21st century Australia, or any civilized country, continue to live under and even celebrate an electoral system that was designed with the express purpose of giving disproportionate power to slave owners?
Here in Queensland we had a totally crooked system where the Premier in power moved the electoral boundaries and won due to Gerrymandering the process.
Jo Bjelke-Petersen in 1972 was elected Premier with just 20% of the primary vote.
Our system for government, and the system in the USA needs to change, it's corrupt to the core... most countries are the same. (the system is all about keeping power to a select few)
Lobbying should be outlawed, so should large political donations!.... for starters.
