Too bad they need a cord ever 200 miles or so.. Honestly Elon Musk has missed the boat.. If he installed solar panels on the roof of the car to charge it while driving it could make them even more advantageous.. Definitly would be a boon for those trucks he's building.. Slap Solar on the roof of the trailers of those trucks and it might extend their range even further..

You're either vastly overestimating how much power solar panels generate or you're underestimating how much power cars use. Even if you covered the top of the car with panels, you're talking a couple hundred watts in full sunlight. The smallest charger available on a Tesla is 11,500 watts. Several EVs have solar panels that can keep the car cool when parked in the sun.

Tesla (and anyone else) may well put solar panels on the trailers of their trucks. It's a good amount of flat space, weight isn't as much of an issue, and they're more likely to spend the whole day outside.
