The fact that the actual issue being voted on is unbelievably stupid is why this is such a big deal. During the campaign, Trump promised to move the embassy. It the bigger picture of his campaign, it was one of the less insane things being proposed, so nobody paid much attention. Then all of the sudden he ordered it, which of course should not have been a big surprise because it was a campaign promise. But WHY was it a campaign promise? What does the United States gain by building a new embassy for a few billion dollars? All of that construction will of course have to be done by American contractors for security reasons. I assume that it was requested by Sheldon Adelson and that crazy wing of the GOP, who align with the crazy evangelical Christian wing on all kinds of Israel stuff.
So we're going to build a new embassy in Jerusalem. Great. The UN then schedules a vote on a completely nonbinding (see: pointless) condemnation of the plan. The boss move there is to say "Have fun with your nonbinding vote, UN. We abstain. Later." and never speak of it again. The Trump move is to throw down a "either you're with us or against us, and if you're against us, we're immediately canceling all aid". That's really the only move Trump has ever used in his entire life- "You need my money so you have to do what I say".
Trump made this a huge deal right there. For no reason. Gaining nothing. Trump mentioned how much money we'll save. But the combined aid to all of those countries is a couple billion dollars. The Trump Tax Scam he's so proud of runs a deficit of $1.48 TRILLION dollars. If the Republicans do cut foreign aid, China will be right there to replace it, plus some. Those motherfuckers are good at building infrastructure, and they are happy to take natural resources in exchange.
Trump gave the entire world the opportunity to tell America to go fuck itself and everyone who remotely matters did.

considering the bipartisan support these votes got, my guess (i admit, complete speculation) is that every administration has gone on record supporting it, but held off on actually doing it cause they thought it would harm the peace process.Hasn't every administration prior to Trump promised to move the embassy? prior administrations probably tried to hedge between supporting israel (i.e., we recognize jerusalem as israel's capital) and not inflaming muslims by going forward with physically moving their embassy there.
