I played badminton in Corporate Challenge last year. It's pretty fun, and like a mix of tennis and volleyball. It's definitely a sport. There are tons of less-athletic Olympic events.

I did fencing this year. That was really fun, and surprisingly athletic.
badminton players are incredibly strong athletes, huge verticles, the game requires a lot of explosive power and stamina as well as quick reflexes. Badminton is also a highly participated sport worldwide so the talent pool is deep. Im not sure how anyone could questions it's validity in the olympics, I agree with you. I also agree that it's the IOC's fault for creating a format where there is some advantage to losing matches. but the athletes also have to try, have you seen the clips of it yet? It was absolutely ridiculous and they deserved to be punted. They should just do a draw exactly like tennis does, you lose you're out, you win you move on in the event.

sorry about the music but shows the sport and it's athletes off well.

Almost as good as the previous New Zealand badminton team name that will no doubt appeal to many members of this site.

Boxing: Judges under fire amid "fix" claims
LONDON (Reuters) - Olympic judges and referees came under fire on Wednesday with one fighter accusing them of "a fix", another successfully appealing a loss and even boxing great Lennox Lewis questioning some of their calls.

Iran's Ali Mazaheri cried foul when the heavyweight was disqualified after being warned three times for persistent holding against Cuban Jose Larduet Gomez despite leading by two points going into the second round.

"It was a fix. I could have got a bronze easily if it hadn't been for that," an irate Mazaheri, who walked out of the ring before the decision was officially announced, told reporters through a translator.

"In my previous fights I had done really well. It was a set up."

The International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) responded to Mazaheri's allegations in an email to Reuters, saying: "The Iranian boxer received three warnings during his bout.

"According to Rule 12.2.1 of the AIBA Technical & Competition Rules, 'only three warnings may be given to the same boxer in one contest. The third warning brings automatic disqualification'."

Two bouts earlier, Japan's bantamweight Satoshi Shimizu, trailing by seven points going into the last round against Magomed Abdulhamidov, knocked the Azerbaijani down six times, the first of which he struggled to get up from.

The judges scored the round 10-10, handing Shimizu two extra points for a warning against Abdulhamidov, who propped himself up against the top rope as the referee raised his hand in victory.

The 25-year-old fighter was helped out of the ring by his trainer and Shimizu's team appealed the outcome.

The Japanese boxer's team leader Masamori Yamane accused the referee of trying to support Abdulhamidov by attempting to fix his headgear.

After deliberating for over an hour, AIBA said that under its rules, the referee should have given the Azerbaijani fighter "at least" three standing counts which would have resulted in the contest being stopped.

They, therefore, overturned the result, handing victory to Shimizu, who was staggered by the original decision hours earlier.

"I was shocked about the result. He fell down so many times. Why didn't I win? I don't understand," Shimizu told reporters, adding he thought the referee should have stopped the fight with Abdulhamidov obviously groggy in the final round.

"This is the second Olympics I have attended and even in Beijing I wasn't happy about the judgement, so I don't know what to do about that. I am really not happy about that."

AIBA officials will consider on Thursday whether to sanction the referee in Shimizu's bout, the association said in a statement.

In December last year, an AIBA-appointed investigation committee dismissed allegations that Azerbaijan was promised two boxing gold medals the London Olympics in exchange for a $10-million loan to the sport's ruling body.

In a statement released at the time, the Special Investigation Committee (SIC) said the report aired on September 23 on the British broadcaster the BBC's Newsnight program was "groundless and unsupported by any credible evidence".

Before sitting down to commentate on the session for British radio, former world heavyweight champion Lewis said he was impressed by the talent on show but had concerns about the judging.

"What I'm concerned about is probably the judging. You never know who is going to win until the end of the fight," said Britain's Lewis, a dual citizen who won gold for Canada in 1988.

German rower leaves London after reported ties to neo-Nazis surface

Nadja Drygalla, a German rower who already competed at the Olympics, is on her way home from London a bit earlier than she intended. Drygalla decided to leave the Games after reports surfaced that she is connected to a neo-Nazi group in Germany.

Drygalla's boyfriend is reportedly a leader of the Rostock National Socialists, a group German intelligence describes as neo-Nazi and racist.

"Miss Drygalla confirmed credibly her commitment to the Olympic Charter," the head of Germany's committee Michael Vesper said. "She is leaving the Olympic Village so as not to be a burden for the team."

Drygalla is a member of Germany's women's eight. Her team was eliminated in the repechage round.

This isn't the first time Drygalla has been connected to Germany's far-right. According to German broadcaster DW, she was connected to another neo-Nazi in March of 2011. This forced her to resign from the Mecklenburg-Western Pomeranian police force.

Greek triple jumper Voula Papachristou was expelled by her national organizing committee before the Olympics began for making a racist comment on Twitter. Likewise, a Swiss soccer player was removed from his team for comments about the South Korean team. The difference between Drygalla and the other two is the German organizing committee said she is still in line with the Olympic ideal. She made the choice to leave because of the distraction it could bring to the German Olympians.

And then there is this idiotic bullshit.

Web Criticizes NBC for ‘Badly-Timed’ Olympics Commercial

Was it bad timing or insensitivity? Moments after Bob Costas was talking about Gabby Douglas's record-breaking gold medal and how she was the first African American to win the women's all-around title, a commercial came on featuring a monkey doing gymnastics. The spot was for NBC's fall show "Animal Practice," which the network has been promoting heavily through out the Games. In the series, a monkey, whose name is Crystal, plays a character called Dr. Rizzo. Seriously.

Social media immediately lit up in protest with one Twitter user posting, "Anybody else notice that NBC just went racist?" Another person Tweeted, "NBC is not racist. They are just careless. And Lazy."

Agree. I played Badminton at a very competitive level in highschool in every event (singles, doubles, and mixed doubles). One of the most fun sports in my opinion and requires very low ability to start playing. I quit for awhile but just got back into it 2 years ago and now play recreationally weekly.

It is an amazing workout if you play singles. If you are not in as good of shape then play doubles. If you are looking to pick up chicks its a great sport as it seems that nearly half of all drop in players are female and often single (mid 20's). Even better if you like asians.

Spence was pretty much robbed blind in boxing today, too. But it looks like they've filed an appeal and had the decision overturned.

Still in the habit of quoting only half of what I post, I see.
