what the fuck happened to maia....
he gassed 6 minutes into this fucking fight, hes shooting singles on a wrestler every.. single... time... and his corner is giving him striking advice against an opponent who is outstriking him like 3-1.

And he almost bled out during the final seconds of the match.
It's in Brazil was he able to juice?
Covington may not make it out of Brazil alive.
Maia has had gas tank issues his entire career. His Kryptonite has always been guys with good wrestling. There's nothing in his skill set that was going to allow him to win that fight. Colby knew that when he asked for it.
Despite Covington winning that fight he isn't ready for Woodley. His stand-up is fucking sloppy as hell and his gas tank didn't look great either.
Is Machida coming out to the GoT theme?
Colby plays a ton of poker.
Time for Machida to call it a day. That chin is toast and the long break didn't help.
Woodly is going to make quick work of Colby, zero doubt.
I dont think its fair to go after Machida's chin because the likes of Brunson ko'd him btw. That's jus what Brunson does.
When Machida looks shit against someone who doesnt harvest souls on the reg, I'll be a lot closer to that sentiment.

a fighter who relied on being faster than the opponent and catching him mid-strike got older, got slower, got crushed a few times, then got 2 years off.
edit: LOL, sorry, I honestly thought you were talking about Machida. I mis-read, and I blame it on Lew. And Bucky. And Sparty, and the shredded toys.
His last 3 fights he's been hurt to the head very badly. The brain doesn't recover well from that, especially in an older athlete.
there was once a maia who would solve that all through technique.

I think you intended this response to be directed at Machida? I agree, but I also feel like a stiff breeze hurt him in the fights vs both Romero and Rockhold. He slower, he doesn't pull the trigger on counters and his chin can't hold up. He has no business fighting anymore.
There really hasn't been, he's never been able to solve the top tier fighters and specifically the top notch wrestlers. Maia doesnt have a double leg and you aren't taking any good wrestler down with a single or sneaky inside trips like he uses against guys like Masvidal.
True, but I dare say his biggest issue is his gas tank. He's not the best in the weight class, but when he has to work for almost anything but back control, he's done by the middle of round 2. Lots of people cant beat woodley, or Munoz in his prime, but Colby was a challenge that was more than accomplishable, IMO. Old dog learns new tricks, but never mastered cardio, unfortunately.
Both Maia and Machida are masters of the style they chose. Neither ever mastered the styles that have come to be most important in present-day MMA.
This was true before others solved Maia via tachnique. We know that for sure now.
I wonder why his cardio has always been dog shit? Perhaps he doesn't put in the work or just adrenaline dump? I thought Maia probably was going to look for a single leg then pull guard like he has so often in the past. Covington was just ready for it and would splay Maia's back leg and control the position. I honestly don't think I've ever seen Maia take a top wrestler down and Covington is a division one all american.
Covington is fun and I hope he refines his stand-up. I cheer against him but guys like him keep my interest. I don't think he's ready for Woodley or Wonderboy. I'd really like to see him fight Masvidal next.
after 25+ UFC fights, it can't possibly still be an adrenaline dump, at least as we traditionally know it.
Not a traditional takedown by any stretch, but his sub on Chael is a memory burned into my mind the same as things like Gonzaga head-kicking Cro-cop. I think we can consider Chael a top wrestler, but ymmv.
I'm in for either fight.I don't think he's ready for Woodley or Wonderboy. I'd really like to see him fight Masvidal next.
Yeah Chael is certainly top flight when it comes to wrestling. I don't remember the fight well but I'm guessing he pulled guard or had some sneaky inside leg trip on Chael then wrapped him up like a snake?
Edit - I just watched the fight on mma-core (great resource for old fights).

So who does Covington fight next? In fact who does Woodley fight next? There doesn't seem to be an obvious contender? My guess is they may do the Covington vs Woodley fight? I'm always suspicious that the UFC coaches the fighters on their call outs. If they do that fight I think Woodley knocks him out, Covington isn't a hard target to connect with.
How do you guys see the GSP vs Bisping fight going? Sonnen had an interesting breakdown and he picked GSP to win the fight. He said despite the size difference GSP is significantly stronger and better technically. I think Bisping has a large toughness edge though.
Woodley has shoulder issues, probably looking at some sort of #1 contender fight coming up before he fights anyone.
Hard to know. Does the size slow GSP down? Does the age or time off? Is Bisping old yet? More variables in this fight than most.
