I guess it's also possible that he just gambled at the end because he knew he was dying anyway, but to be honest, that takes some of the fun out of gambling. If you knew you were dying next week, would you spend your time grinding video poker? Even if you got lucky and won a lot, would it mean anything?

How about he gambled this much, so he could demand the suite he wanted/needed for the shooting?
