in fairness to jack, i think he backed off the equivalence between the charlottesville white supremacists and counter-protesters pretty quickly.

Yup I've been looking at this as a continuation of the violent clashes between the Far Left and Far Right that were going on at Berkeley earlier on in the year. Obviously there are many groups involved at Charlottesville that aren't Far Left extremists looking to fight and it's not easy to determine what exactly is going on. I'm not suggesting that the Far Left is as dangerous as the Far Right currently, I'd wager there are way more people in the USA with Far Right views as its a group that as held influence for way longer. I still stand by my point that there are violent extremists on both the left and right and it's not a good idea to just focus on one the ones on the "other" side while giving a pass to the ones on "your" side.

Demonstrations over apartheid, abortion rights or sexual assault rarely became violent; students marched and shouted, and then went home safely at the end of the day.

But that was before the flowering of the alt-right and the response by militant left-wing anti-fascist groups, as well as the ease with which social media makes it possible to draw outside demonstrators to a campus.

Obviously the NYT is left leaning so they will blame the far right, while those on the right will blame the far left for starting the violence. The reality is there are extremists on both sides and as things continue to escalate further so will the number of extremists continue to grow. They are vastly outnumbered by the moderates atm but if this carries on for the rest of the Trump presidency there will be a lot of dead bodies come next election thats for sure.

White nationalist Christopher Cantwell, who spoke extensively with VICE News as the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia unfolded on Saturday, is now wanted for arrest on felony charges in Virginia, the Boston Globe reported Thursday.

Cantwell is wanted on two warrants — both related to events in Charlottesville — for felony charges for the illegal use of gases and injury by caustic agent or explosive, Virginia Commonwealth Attorney’s Office authorities told the Globe.

Each charge carries a minimum sentence of five years’ imprisonment.

Asked about the warrants, Cantwell told VICE News he acted in self-defense and plans to turn himself in.

“I think it’s obvious that I acted in self-defense,” he said. “I’ll beat the case if there is any justice, I’m just not certain justice is part of the equation anymore.”
