I had the pleasure of catching the last few innings of both games over the weekend, so I got to see the Dodgers steal defeat from the hands of certain victory both games. Although when the bases loaded in the 7th yesterday that was one of those situations where you knew it was gonna happen, so no big surprise. Still, very LOL.

Mixed feelings about this one. He will be a huge upgrade at 3B or SS. My feeling right now is that they should let Cruz keep playing SS (because he's hitting fairly well) and put Hanley at third.
But anyway, he is hitting poorly this year (and was also disappointing in 2001), and he is owed around $37 million (I think) between now and 2014. That's a lot of salary to take on for a guy who is hitting under .250 at the moment.
I was hoping they would get a rent-a-player type -- someone they could pick up in a salary dump move, without having to shoulder extra years of an overpriced salary.
They're 2 1/2 behind the Giants and need help, though.
Would be nice if they can snag a good starter, too.
They didn't give up much at all in this trade. Nate Eovaldi has sucked so far.
I just wish they weren't paying so much for Ramirez.
I think it's a great trade for the Dodgers, or at least a pure upside move. Even Hanley at his current production is better than what they had, and Choate has been killing as a lefty-killer out of the pen. I'm guessing the Dodgers said "we'll take on his whole salary as long as we only give back low-ceiling prospects." If the ownership wants to spend it, then why not?
Of course you wonder why Miami couldn't get better offers.
Rumor also has it that Ryan Dempster (who has trade veto rights) wants to go to the Dodgers, as opposed to the Braves, where the Cubs already have a deal in place. Cubs apparently asking for at least high end prospect though in return
I think it's a pretty decent trade for the Dodgers. The knocks on Ramirez are he's had a bad year and a half, and he's a bit unenthusiastic. I wouldn't go so far to call him a problem, but his head isn't in the game at times.
The kid can get really hot though and carry you for weeks at a time. He is the type where a change of scenery could just snap him out of it. He isn't old and on the decline, and he's a talented player. Why he has played under par the past few years is a big question mark for everyone considering his talent level. I consider him a good gamble, and the Dodgers can afford him. If he doesn't work out, he's still movable in the off-season if they picked up just a small amount of his contract. He's young enough and talented enough where someone will certainly take him off your hands if the Dodgers picked up $2-$3 million a year on his contract should he continue to under-perform and they want to move him.
The talk just yesterday on S.Florida radio was that they wouldn't trade him unless someone was willing to also take Heath Bell's new contract, which is horrible, so they aren't going to be happy down there at all. This almost assures that the Marlins are going to have to attach Bell to Johnson in order to rid themselves of Bell's albatross, and essentially go into full rebuild the year after building a new stadium. Being down there last winter, it appeared the Marlin's were poised to turn the corner, but this season has been worst case scenario. Under-performing players, injuries, and the worst attendance in league history for a team who just opened a stadium. Their only sell-out was opening day.
Ramirez is lazy. Doesn't care about fielding at all. Thinks its a waste of his time. Hes living off his 2009 season and his talent/potential. Maybe this trade wakes him up. Usually these guys dont care where they are.

I use to go to games as a kid. I ran around old Tiger Stadium quite a few times and luckily avoided whatever pedophiles were lurking around. I also use to listen to Ernie Harwell on the radio announcing games, then the Tigers won in 1984 but since then it was downhill. I moved to Toronto while the BlueJays played in Exhibition Stadium (a football field) where tickets were sold for $4 each and beer was a couple bucks. While on work boondoogles I visited Chicago, Boston, LA, Anaheim, probably some other stadiums as well and had good times supporting the beer stand. The event that turned me off for good was the strike in the 90's. Once the business took the front pages the romance was over for me. The game was dull and the players wanted lol millions of dollars to play it. Ticket prices went way up and beer is now $10 each. Fuck that. Break the cycle. My kids have never played the game nor gone to a game nor witnessed me watching a game on TV. They have grown without baseball and it's very unlikely they will pick it up or introduce it to their kids.
I am surprised it is still a viable business with the salaries the way they are. Why do people like supporting these athletes? Let it die.
Hockey is going the same route for me. I no longer go to NHL games although I still know what a trap is (limitles shot) My kids play and I have an ice rink in the backyard during winter but that is more a fuck you towards the weather and what the hell else is there to do during winter in Canada. I support OHL hockey and the odd AHL game but the NHL is just silly. I can buy season tickets in the OHL for the price of one family outing to see the Leafs play.
