This ban is sort of a good thing for the trans community imo. It has highlighted the discrimination that they face. It has people (like me) who have never really given their plight a second thought standing up for them, all be it in a small way via twitter and a convo with a family member.
But this debate is happening all over the world as we speak, and I don't think they've ever been shown this much support.
Really believe this will go a long way in their fight for greater tolerance.
Gay community went through all the same shit.
Yea some good might come out of it.
Quickly looking at some numbers roughly 1 in 200 transgendered in active duty (6.6k to 1.4 million by the highest estimate) and the medical costs related to them are 8.4m (the highest estimate) from a total budget of 6.2b (1 in 700 ratio) from a report by Rand institute from the distant past of 2016.
https://www.rand.org/pubs/research_reports/RR1530.html
...and the Guardian article in case anyone thought that medical costs were a real reason for any of this...

Yep, the military spends 5x more on Viagra than the total medical cost for all trans personnel.
Amongst other factors, this decision was based on reasons of ignorance and religion. NOT lol $$$.

Discrimination among other reasons have been shown to have an effect in mental well being. Also in this case less discrimination is better, just in case you were confused how it works.
No one is saying you should get a pass from anything regarding mental or physical health while enlisting/serving just because you're transgender.
It's weird for me that this ban is even legal."
I must take issue. While not conforming is a cause of many life problems mental illness and mental well being are totally different. You first have to define mental illness and I'm sure the military has it's basic standards but transgenderism is a physical phenomenon that does not come with nor produce mental illness. If Joe-Jane can pass the tests put forth, you're in the Army. Discrimination 100%
It's still ok to call trans people physically ill though right?
but an anonymous forum like this is the only place you can even have this discussion.
to even question whether a group that has a near-50% suicide attempt rate may have underlying mental issues would cause you to be immediately unemployable.
for god's sake, there isn't one person on this forum that believes minors should be permitted to have sex reassignment surgery, but to even express that thought publicly would make you an outcast.
that's where we are in 2017
For now i wouldn't allow minors to get any kinda plastic surgery (or hormones) that's not corrective. Maybe in 50 years when there are no more risks to surgeries and reversing your bionic cock operation takes 15mins we can revisit this issue.
Also there's long list of things you probably shouldn't say publicly and it's been that way bout always.
SHALL WE MOVE ON FROM TRANNIES??

i dont think there is any correlation between being trans and mental illness, beyond a lot of mentally ill people choosing to be trans.
does that make sense? its a subtle point.
and ive been fishing literally all day and i feel like im trying to carve an ice swan with a ball peen hammer at the moment.
lets put it like this; if i have to choose between hiring a trans person and a cis person to work with, im giving absolutely no fucks whatsoever about the trans person being trans unless they are half assing it and cant pass and look like a fucking weird stomach turning messtastrophe like bruce jenner.
then into the garbage their resume goes.
but im basically never looking at a trans person and being like UH OH THIS PERSON MIGHT BE MENTALLY ILL.
unless cant pass / messtastrophe. thats someone who has to see nothing but horror and disgust reflected back in strangers faces until they kill themselves. which will tax on a nigga.

And those with significant mental health history would not be allowed to join military anyways whether transgendered or not. The screening for mental health has always been in place and yes a lot of transgendered would not be allowed into army as a result. But there are also many mentally healthy transgendered who are totally fit to serve.
By your logic native indian Americans should be banned as well.
Contrary to popular opinion the army is relatively picky on who they accept as far as similar jobs.
And yes there is huge correlation between trans and mental illness. Largely due to increased victim.ization and discrimination from community. Although also ste.s fro. Gender dysphoria
