I told the same thing to my father in February, when we were discussing the future of US health care.
I said that Republicans have a relatively short time to fix our existing system. Not just a band-aid fix, but a massive overhaul which will improve the situation for most Americans. They don't seem interested in doing this, but rather are obsessing over the concept of, "We don't want to pay for other people's health care", which just makes them come off as cold and callous.
After what looks like an inevitable period of fail regarding health care reform, idiot Americans will throw up their hands and say, "Well, maybe the left was right. Maybe socialized medicine is the only answer!", and support for that will grow.
I don't like it, but that's the future we're headed for, and for all the wrong reasons.
If I were in charge of the Republican counter to Obamacare, I would state that I'm leaving Obamacare in place while we seriously reform cost, fraud, and billing, with the promise to seriously reform/replace Obamacare itself once these matters are under control.
That would be a lot harder for liberals to criticize. Who would argue for higher costs, continued opaque billing, or continued high fraud levels?
Then, once that was at least somewhat accomplished, I would work on a reform to Obamacare which keeps its basic premise (no one can be denied for health care, subsidies for those who truly can't afford it), while removing lots of the ridiculous aspects of it (including the dumb "one size fits all" pricing).
And for all the whining on the right about "OMG a mandate to buy insurance is so awful", you actually need that in order to prevent people from gaming the system.
Otherwise people will just go without health insurance, and then buy it only when they have a major medical expense coming up. Clearly that's not fair to insurance companies or anyone else paying for an ongoing policy.
There either needs to be a mandate or a clear agreement by those who choose not to sign up for insurance that they will be left to die if they choose not to have a policy and can't afford care.
But it's gotta be one of those two things.
The current Republican plan removing the mandate but allowing insurance companies to charge more for 1 year for people with gaps in insurance is just LOL.
Yeah, I'm sure insurance companies will just love it when the guy without insurance for 30 years pays a higher premium this year only because he has an expensive-to-treat cancer.

They don't really want any cost reform or any other meaningful reform.
