Having insurance companies making huge bank from healthcare is very difficult for those of us on the outside (with free healthcare) to understand.

Without even getting into the reasons why socialized medicine sucks, I'll cover it from an even simpler standpoint.

The US has a problem that other countries do not -- simply that health care has become tremendously overpriced.

Current proposals in the US for socialized care would simply shift the bill from the patients and insurance companies to the government. Costs will still be ridiculously high, but the bill will just be shifted to Uncle Sam (the taxpayers). In fact, it would get even WORSE, because utilization would be much higher (due to everything being "free").

Idiot liberals like to spout nonsense such as, "Take insurance company profits and marketing expenses out, and we will save a ton of money, and everything will be much cheaper!", but that's completely misunderstanding where the money in health care has been going. Insurance company profits and marketing overhead are a drop in the bucket compared to overall health care costs in the US.

The problem here is that the costs are outrageously high, and no one is proposing anything effective to do anything about it. Instead, we have endless debates as to who pays for it. That's where our core mistake is.

Once we get costs, fraud, and waste under control, then we can talk about who pays for it.

You visit your doctor for your annual checkup, which is 100% covered by your insurance. (This whole premise violates the whole concept of 'insurance', but that's another topic for another time.)

Near the end of the checkup, the doctor asks you, "So... any other pain or discomfort you're experiencing?"

You stop and think for a second, wanting your doctor to know everything so you can get the most out of your checkup.

"Oh, I do have stomach pains every so often. Like maybe once a week."

The doctor asks, "Does it come along with diarrhea? Any blood in the stool?"

"No, not usually," you respond. "Just kinda hurts sometimes and goes away."

"Okay, just watch it and let us know if anything changes," says your doctor, seemingly helpfully.

You go home from your 100% covered annual physical feeling good.

You get your bill in the mail.

You owe a $50 co-pay for a gastro exam, and you see in the Explanation of Benefits that the insurance company also cut the doctor another $83 check. This is ON TOP of the hundreds of dollars you see your insurance paid the doctor for the annual physical.

Was that an actual gastro exam? Obviously not.

Did you know that answering a doctor's question of, "Does anything hurt?" constitutes a separate exam? Of course not.

Should the doctor be earning another $133 for this trick -- $50 of which came out of your pocket as a result of your "free" exam? Nope!

Is this legal right now? YES IT IS!

Will changing from our current system to a socialized medicine system solve any of the above, aside from shifting that $50 over to the government's tab? No, it will not.


This is why REFORM must come first, and deciding who will pay should come second.

In the US you pay your taxes and THEN you start paying for health care--insurance premiums, co-pays, and/or out of pocket for whatever isn't covered. Even if you're covered at work and you have awesome insurance, that's still a huge cost for the employer on top of their taxes and your salary. Who ends up paying more? Americans, AINEC.

American health care is crazy expensive precisely BECAUSE it is private and involves the profit motive.

whether you think it's a good thing or not, socialized medicine is an absolute certainty in the US in the very near future. in 20 or 30 years, people won't even understand that this was a discussion.

for god's sake, charles krauthammer, who is as big a free market conservative as has ever existed, said this week that we're less than seven years away from single payer in the US. i think that's a bit aggressive, but he's right that the majority of people now see health care as a right.

“I think historically speaking we are at the midpoint,” Krauthammer stated. “We had seven years of ObamaCare, changing expectations. And I would predict that in less than seven years, we will be in a single-payer system.”

He went on to explain how ironic he feels this is due to his belief that the ACA has failed and led to widespread Democratic election defeats over the past six-plus years. However, what it did do is shift the debate to the left.

“Look at the terms of the debate,” he said. “Republicans are not arguing the free market anymore.”
