With the sole exception of Larry staying true to form, I want to extend my sincere thanks for all the positive feedback and insight offered.

Its all very much appreciated, trust me

Depression is a real bitch, but so is life for that matter

I will say that I'm taking an extremely bold step very shortly to confront aspects of my life that have become unmanageable, and will definitely share all the details with this community when the opportunity presents itself.

I guess its fair to characterize as a 'blockbuster' turn of events that will certainly not disappoint.

Stay tuned, and thanks to all for the thoughtful replies and encouragement

    Tyde,

Though I posted this before but aparently I didn't. My wife is a licensed clinical social worker. She deals with people who are way more fucked upnthen yourslef on a daily basis. What she tells people is to take comfort in the fact that no feeling lasts forever. When you think you hit rock bottom it's actually a good thing because it can only get better from there. You never feel the same way today that you will tomorrow.

    Hang in there.

"Depression is a real bitch, but so is life for that matter"

Nailed it Buddy. Having dealt with depression several times in my life I have concluded that things are never as bad as they seem at the time and conversely never as good as they feel at the time. I have come to look at life as a series of problems to be solved much like a puzzle. This has helped me deal with adversity in a more constructive way and not feel so sorry for myself when shit hits the fan. It may also come from the wisdom you gain as you age. Maybe you are having an enlightenment moment.

I am obviously not alone when I say I admire how you have turned your life around and how eloquent your writing skills are. You definitely should write a book about your life. I hope your mind finds the peace it is seeking soon.

    Tyde,

You wrote that you have a way with words and I agree. I always joked that you have a book in you. Would definitely read.

I always get a kick out of your boy, Druff, and his love of the nostalgia of his youth. It's cool that he clearly perceives that time in an idealized way. It's an interesting insight into his life. It's not something we all share.

I read your observations about your father etc. There hopefully comes a point in our lives when we stop blaming our parents. Yeah, it's part of the recipe for who we are but recognize it and move on.

I got kids. I did the best I could with them. I know they have some issues with me. You know what? I don't give a shit. Sure I would prefer they like me but I am not their pal - I am their father. Hopefully, they live a fulfilling life without me. That was my job. If I failed them somehow hopefully they have the tools to overcome it. It's up to them.

I'm past it and so should they & you be.

Depression is a brain chemistry thing from what I know. I can't presume to personally understand. You can't rationalize your way out of it. See a doctor and noodle out some light pharma to control it. Alcohol ain't the answer.

Your life's adventure has been unique. You didn't spend 30 years doing 9-5 in a fluorescent lit cubicle. Whatever your occasional regrets about the path taken, your experiences good & bad are light years more interesting to the rest of us. Combined with your angst and gift for gab we have the recipe for some great storytelling or at the very least interesting dinner conversation.

Aside from the book & story I selfishly want, there will always be some way to harness your unique experience if you are lucky enough to find the right audience - employer, investor, publisher, podcaster, whatever... you pick.

Lighten up bitch. You're a fascinating character.

    Always a fan.

    It's this isn't it.

I forgot to ask earlier, work will sometimes help with depression in that there's less time to ruminate etc. Has the work helped at all in that way?

I'm just relieved no one is blaming substance abuse in this thread. Nothing has been demonized more for mental well being. The problem isnt people getting high/drunk, its how people manage their heads when they are sober that leads people to wellness.

Wow, a lot of people can't admit/let out what you've done here. If indeed you are trying to change that was a brave step.

I hope you can understand how some people may doubt your sincerity. Abusers often make promises/confessions only to lapse into another cycle more extreme that previous.

Eventually, its our choice who each of us is. The encouraging thing about your post is it appears you are accepting responsibility for your actions/choices rather than externalizing.

Maybe you will find comfort in something I tell myself: in life it is not where you end up but how far you travel

    Good luck!

One thing I've always respected about tyde is that he's man enough to never play that fucking substance victim card. He carries his drink like a man.

People crying foul about addiction when they are really depressed is the ultimate pussy move; deal with your problems, not your excuses.

Since this is kind of like AA, where one has to make amends to those he has wronged, let's have Tyde start with Druff and see where this takes us:

I went through a period of depression in my early 20's. Lots of drinking and gambling did not help.

Regular exercise actually solved everything for me.

I get a bit of the blues now and then living in shifty Portland weather but just force myself to still do thints regardless.

Therapy may help with daddy issues. Be serious about rehab if that's what you are referring to. Drinking can't possibly still be fun

such a nicely worded post. . You think all the germans weren't nazis? you're right they weren't. but guess what buddy? if they weren't working for them one way, they were working for them another. Lots of germans turned over jews to the nazis to save themselves. If they didn't comply, they went to the gas chambers. pretty sick huh. I don't know what this proves, but it's what happened.

You use the word estimated. Estimates are not a real number. they're a guess. a hypothesis.

I use that word too. Like when I had to estimate how much time it took for THC to leave my system. it was an estimate, not a hard real number. Sometimes it was 10 days, sometimes it was 14. So estimated 10% of muslims are radicalized? Let me see some stats to back that up. Until then, that's a fucking estimate. so yeah. it could be 1% of muslims. it could be 50%. do we even know? No we don't. How can we know? there's over a billion muslims in the world. have we polled all of them to find out their views on Jihad? I don't think we have.

How can you trust any information coming from our government? really. have you not learned yet?

JFC larry. You win the prize for fucking up a thread.

Not clear here, depression comes before alcohol. People with bad depression don't care about much such as being labelled an addict. It's the more visible flaw but not the root problem.

If you don't like your father you can do what I did.

We all love marty but come on. He suffers from depression and regrets saying some nasty shit to both family and friends. Is this anything all of us didn't already know?

I want to hear this epic story coming up. Fucking Marty been working around only men for months. Maybe he fell in love who the fuck knows. Can't wait to hear though.

Marty when you said you were going to go on the boat for an extended period, I did think the hardest part of this for you would be leaving Tommy.

You must be close to finishing your 4 month stint soon - what are your plans once you have some free time back?
