my go to wine at least for red wine is JLOHR never disappoints, i don't consider this a expensive or overly complicated wine but very good IMO. costco sells it i think 12 or 14 per bottle so get him a case then.

His estate is beautiful but the wine is not very good. Been to his vineyard a few times.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions...I lol'd at a few of the non-serious ones and they brought back memories.
There is an awesome place near me that has lots of wine and other liquors, and really good smoked sausage and other meats & cheeses. They can put together some pretty kick-ass gift baskets of cheese, sausage and wine. I'm going to go this route but I just didn't know for sure what I would put as the drink.
