In a sport like MMA where every fight could be your last one, who wouldn't want to take more guaranteed money?

Wouldn't you rather fight twice a year for $100k each than 3 times a year for $20k each?

Only problem is the upside of the UFC. But let's face it only the top 10% in UFC are actually making bank, so if you're not there you might as well gtfo.

But the bottom guys in Bellator aren't making shit either.

People go to Bellator because they either get cut, get offered a deal they don't like, or go through a phase where they want to be the headliner even if the talent level is down. If someone is stuck fighting on facebook prelims or at the top of a prelims card they might feel misused which sometimes is the case but other times it's them having too big of an ego. A lot of them migrate back over to UFC after a few fights anyways.

At least on a UFC card everyone has a chance at a performance bonus which can be up to 50k on the evening but in Bellator do they even have that?

If they do then the top performers on Bellator cards are likely walking away with a set of steak knives.

Trying to dig up deets on why/how that happened. Mitrione, for all his faults, is super legit and had a ton of potential. He was crushing his last fight until Ronda's pet boy clawed out his eye. He didnt even drop 3 in a row. And he could sure as fuck hold his own against the likes of Mir, Silva, JDS, maybe even Roy. Fucked shit.

Mitrione has always been my least liked fighter. Watched his season of ultimate fighter (the year Bader won) and just had a mad disdain for his attitude. That being said, he wasn't a bad fighter and seemed to be improving. I won't miss him though.

I was one of his loudest critics for a long, long time. But Ive watched him improve and demonstrate conclusively that he belongs in the ring. He's clearly putting in the work in camps/training, he fights clean, he doenst talk shit, and he shows up ready to work.

So yeah I think his loss is a real blow to the division.

The UFC HW division just got weaker....but Bellator's division isn't all that good, either.

In the end, at 37, I just think Mitrione wanted more up front, chance to win a title be damned. He probably foresaw he'd need to win 4 fights in a row in the UFC to even be considered for a title shot, and now he's making 6 figs per fight + sponsors + a chance to fight Fedor in Rizin, which can provide its own nice little payday in its own right. (No bonuses in Bellator, FYI). There are also fights with Rampage, King Mo, and Wanderlei down the road.

There's also a scenario where, if he is still in shape by the time his 4 fight deal is done, he can win the Bellator HW belt, beat/KO Fedor and then when he hits FA again, maybe the UFC (where, if you heard him in interviews, he did want to try and work it out with them to stay) has no other choice but to offer him a max deal because one of the problems of their HW division is that unlike their other divisions, it is not stacked with up and coming talent on the bottom end. There are no Thomas Almeidas, Aljamain Sterlings in the HW divison to replace a Ben Henderson level of veteran and still keep the same level of fighting a UFC division should have.

I don't see that happening per se, just because of there being alot of "ifs" (health/age), frustration with the Reebok thing with Matt and the fact Dana holds grudges.....but HW is so weak for the UFC that if they can't get new blood to develop in there soon, they may not have any other choice ESPECIALLY if Jon Jones decides to move to HW and just clears out the top of division and they need a new face for a fight.

Press vs piggyback arbitrage. Nobody likes reebok now, but anyone that wants an Anderson Silva branded t-shirt, reebok gets its cut. Unless there is a huge dropoff on merch sales, reebok will consider it a win.

The thing that gets me that seems to have gotten lost about this fight is that Nate took this fight on 10 days notice. Those kind of pick-up fights don't usually end well.
