It sounds like one of the boats was disabled, the other boat wouldn't leave them and the disabled boat floated into Iran waters.

Not like on the coast but like miles and miles into the ocean.

There was literally no reason to detain them.

Would the U.S. detain Iran ships if they floated into our water?

Apples and Oranges for a variety of reasons.

I do think if we could communicate with them we would offer them support and not detain them.
