It sounds like to me Gut simply has an AL/NL bias

KC is quite clearly the best team in baseball. Best D by far, best base running, best bullpen. Bullpen is so good and so deep that it's not even fair. Like historically good. 3 gold gloves last year, could be 5 this year easily. The problem last year was the offense. Guess what, now they're best in the AL, without Rios for a chunk this year. And our SP has been mediocre to bad. But Volquez is on track, Ventura was Ace last night. Rios is almost back. If the SP improves even slightly, the league is fucked.

First off, you're incorrect about Cueto/Hamels. Cueto is the better pitcher. Do you realize that Cueto's WORST season in the last 5 years was 2013, where he had a 2.82 ERA and missed most of the year with injury? He hasn't had an ERA above 3.00 since 2010. He hasn't lost more than 9 games since 2009. He pitched half his games in a ballpark that favors hitters. He's only 29 years old. 4 of the last 5 years he's had a WHIP under 1.100. Hamels has finished with below a 3.00 ERA only twice in his 10 year career, and his WHIP has been over 1.100 in eight of those ten years. So no question Cueto is better, and you have no clue.

Cueto is also better because the broke ass Royals can't afford Hamels (who has a few years left on his contract), while Cueto is just a rental. So they went with the rental.

What kills me is seeing these managers in 2015 who still have no clue about ideal lineup optimization. Two of the biggest offenders are the teams talked about frequently in this thread, the Royals and Dodgers. Yost and Mattingly are setting their lineups like its 1985. Primarily, they seem to ignore OBP and just put a speedy guy batting leadoff.

The Dodgers were fine for parts of the season with Joc hitting 1st. The decision to switch back to Rollins is mind-boggling, with dropping Joc to 8th! Obviously Mattingly did that when Joc's 1980's baseball card stats were in a slump....but he was still getting on base at a tremendous clip! joc's OBP is .358 now, for comparison Adrian Gonzalez is at .361...and he is in no danger of being dropped in the order. Rollins meanwhile, has been horrible no matter what stats you use. Donnie Baseball would still rather see Rollins pick up ~30-50 more PA's than Joc the rest of the way though. Makes no sense at all.

Royals have been doing it all year with Escobar (career .648 OPS) leading off. The guy should be no higher than 7th in that order. Even better, I seem to recall Lorenzo Cain being the leadoff guy for awhile the last couple years. Made sense again in the traditional old views, fast speedy guy. Then he hit his prime at the plate, became a more complete hitter, improved at just about everything....and Yost drops him down in the order to give more at bats to the SS who cant get on base.

Look at the surging Blue Jays for the counterpoint. After their deadline moves they basically decided to put their best 4 hitters 1-4...so you got Tulo, Donaldson, Bautista, Encarnacion. They even have 2 speedy OF's in Pillar and Revere....1 of those 2 would surely be batting leadoff for Yost. Tampa, oakland, St Louis, Arizona are other teams who are usually great with their lineups, my Twins have been much better this year as well with Molitor as the manager and dinosaur Gardenhire gone.

Yeah, Escobar at the top was a horrible idea.....

The above posts were why I was rooting for the Mets to win this thing, even though I typically root against the team who beat the Dodgers.

I knew jsearles would be unbearable. Instead of simply enjoying his team winning the World Series after 30 years, he actually scanned this long thread to respond to months-old posts criticizing the Royals. Unbelievable.

Oh, and Volquez did have a very unspectacular season. 3.55 ERA and 1.308 WHIP is nothing to get excited about, especially in 2015 when pitching numbers overall are far better than they used to be.
