Thread: ESPN's Britt McHenry seems to act like a bitch to a parking lot attendant -- but was it justified?

Is it a little scummy, yes, but it is their property and you are parking in a tow zone. Drive around and find a place to park or pay for parking somewhere.

    Otherwise

It's more than a little scummy for the owner of the dental office to hide tow trucks who spy on people parking there, and then take a cut of the towing profits.

That's when it transitions from "overly controlling business owner" to "asshole in cahoots with towing companies to tow people for profit".

Just because something is left on your property doesn't give you a right to do with it what you want.

Let's say I park my car at your business after hours, and violate your "parking for customers only" sign.

Do you have the right to take a sledgehammer to my car and destroy it? Can you say, "Well, it was on my property, and you weren't supposed to be here" and get away with it?

Of course not. You can't leave your lot open to the public and then decide you have carte blanche to do what you want with cars that are parked there. Towing is not supposed to be done for punishment or profiteering. It's a last resort when all other methods fail to remove an unauthorized car.

This becomes especially bad when the towing is occurring to line the business owner's pockets, rather than out of concern for his lot being used without his permission.

In this case, the people blocking your driveway are creating a hazard by preventing you from using it, so yes, I would support you towing them immediately.

If you can't see the difference between this and someone parking for a few minutes in an open-to-the-public lot after hours, I don't know what to tell you.
There you go twisting again. I've conceded there is a difference in after hours situations. Now you're trying to act like that's your entire argument.

And your wording is ironic. These people are preventing people from using the business' lot.

Let's find common ground Druff. Do you oppose a businesses right to decide who they want on their property, or do you oppose the punishment of towing? Would you support immediate ticketing and fines?
It's hilarious that we as a society think everyone can be a dr, a lawyer, an engineer. Some people are just fucking stupid. Why can't we just accept that?

I reiterate that if big dick parks at a pharmacy to pick me up condoms and then run a cross the street to get that lube that doesn't chaff his anus does he deserve to get towed.

I would support immediate ticketing if the business owner could not get a piece of the revenue. And of course, ticketing could not be "immediate" unless the city wanted to post someone there.

However, the city employee ticketing would not be allowed to lie in wait, but rather inform anyone they see parking there to move.

So you actually don't disagree that the parking is wrong? You just think the punishment is too harsh?

I disagree the property owner shouldn't get a cut. If I pay $200k for a parking lot in a busy area, people keep parking there blocking my business, why do I care if the city profits off of that? They didn't buy the damn land!

You don't get a cut because this provides the incentive for predatory behavior and bogus/semi-bogus reporting of "violations".

If you are actually the "victim" of unauthorized parkers, you should be thrilled that the city is taking action and taking meausres to stop it. You don't get paid for it on top of that. Private citizens never get a piece of government-levied fines, except in the case of rewards for serious crimes (murder, kidnapping, etc) and tax evasion (where the requirements to get rewarded are very strict, and you can't just submit guesses to the IRS when reporting someone).

In private lots, the lot owner is free to levy parking citations. Enforcement is typically the issue. Lots combat this usually by booting, then refusing to remove the boot until payment is recieved.
One particular business that I'm aware if that fines parking violators is apartment buildings. They can enforce parking rules in their lots, and tenants can face eviction if they don't pay tickets.

I've also heard of cases where a car is blocked in causing the person to miss work or something, you can definitely win a civil judgement

    http://nypost.com/2015/04/17/espn-wa...britt-mchenry/

Yelper Mary El P. said in January she paid with a credit card, was told it didn’t work, then presented another credit card. When the statement came, she claims she was billed twice. She says she called up an employee, who was rude and insulting and informed her that disputing a charge on a credit card was a felony.

Yelper Eric T. alleges that a tow trucker apparently spying on him zipped around the corner while he was letting his dog out to pee — and that when he protested, the Advanced Towing driver yelled out, “Don’t park here you fucking idiotict.”

In early April, a man who ducked into an Arlington CVS for medicine for his sick child says he came back to find his car being jacked up by an Advanced Towing truck — with his two kids inside.

Said Yelper KJ B., “Towing serves a purpose, but this company just steals cars! The first time I was towed was from my very own parking spot at my apartment complex. They claimed they didn’t see my parking sticker (despite its obvious placement on the back where it is on EVERY CAR.)”
There are tons of other complaints, both about incorrect/predatory tows and general rude/insulting behavior by employees.

The last complaint (about the company towing a LEGALLY parked car from an apartment complex) is very common regarding companies like this, and these occur because shady managers at apartment complexes enter into kickback agreements with tow companies, who then patrol the private lots looking for flimsy "violations", including ones that don't exist. As I mentioned before, I had a friend towed from his LEGAL spot in his own complex simply because his tags were a few days expired. (It was towed via twisting "abandoned vehicle" laws, giving complexes the right to tow non-operative vehicles from their lots.)

Basically, the company knows that they are doing something shady, and that people will show up being angry, so they are already on the offensive and insult YOU if you argue with them.

The woman Britt insulted obviously knows what type of company she works for, and what they do to make their money. She is happy to work for this company and make a living from what they do. She did not deserve to be treated respectfully. When you knowingly work for a company and assist them in doing bad things, you deserve to be treated badly.

And given both the editing of the video and the company's history of being insulting to people arguing with them, I think there's a high chance that this "innocent single mom" was giving it as much as she was getting it.

If Juan Sepulveda was running a BAP on a new site, and he hired some guy to collect the money for him, would you be insulting the guy if he knew of Juan's history here but was fine taking a paycheck to help scam people? Of course you would insult him. This isn't much different.

Given the fact that the Problem Internet can find a way to turn virtually any piece of news into a low-grade Kenyon College term paper, I found myself surprised this week that there was no hot taker out there willing to defend ESPN reporter and Sweet Valley High character Britt McHenry. I figured Slate would immediately throw down a “What we talk about when we talk about Britt McHenry” screed, but no. Nothing. Everyone seems to be in perfect agreement that Britt McHenry sucks

There's a reason those tow company clerks are usually behind bullet proof glass. I didn't doubt it was a predatory tow company, but you're still going to get killed on video when you're a beautiful woman making fun of a presumably normal gal. Thats just how it works. That she had a point or possibly baited should be relevant, but it isn't.

When you hit the genetic lottery people expect you to fade that type of shit and be above it because life has been so very kind to you. You have to get that when your her. People are jealous, and when you get that nasty, you're just handing it to them.

Get as nasty as you want. Nobody will care. It's when you delve into bottomset territorry with the "Look at me, I'm so educated and wealthy and I'm in the news business, honey. I'm kind of a big deal" talk that everyone will rightfully despise you.

To me it was the looks stuff more than the position thing. kind of the same in this case, but if you look at how crucified anyone who is perceived as fat shaming someone is, this is that on steroids coming from her. Even the im on TV thing is kind of I'm so hot thing. She could have called her a fucking thief and a hundred other things without issue. She could have punched the actual tow person and the public wouldnt have cared.
