In a former life, I would find myself on high rise construction sites after the steel & decks went up.

If you wanted to go up you had to wait for a temporary elevator that hung off the side of the building to stop. You get in and tell the elevator operator what floor & he pushed the button. Fucking scary at first.

You got to know the guy after a while. Trust me, you treat this guy right or you can wait a long time on some random floor 30 stories high in the wind. Elevator operators were Union and made $45/hr for pushing a button all day. I remember thinking sign me up. They were usually ex crane operators who maybe collapsed a crane or some such mishap.

On the way down to ground I'm standing in the elevator in my fag khakis & polo shirt trying to look like I fit in. Guy looks at me and says don't lock your knees. I'm like, "what?"
