What should I do: The Cell Phone Debacle

my hysterical angst of not having a usable phone has pushed me into the void, tomorrow morning much to the satisfaction of druff and vwls I'll be picking up the 4s. US Customs seized the EVO at the border to check for patent issues apple has with HTC, I can no longer wait. It's not known how long the release date will be postponed and I just can't rock a phone that has to be plugged in any longer.

Plus I found some apps that you can use to work flash on the iphone which is basically my biggest beef with the phone, those who have iphones and want to stream sports from vipbox / frontrowsports just buy and download skyfire from the app store, it's only $2.99 and it is flash enabled.

Also I have 14 days from the point of activation to return / exchange the phone for a $35 restocking fee, so if the evo gets released inside this time I will definitely be taking that avenue.

With all of that being said, I kind of find it sickening that I'm being forced into getting an iphone when it's not really the phone I want at all because of apples ridiculous patent claim but I guess they just won another customer.

I still don't think the iPad is at the point where it replaces a PC.

It probably will get there eventually, but it's nowhere near there now, for a variety of reasons.

The iPhone 4S' biggest two drawbacks are the lack of flash support and the poor battery life.

I haven't downloaded one of the flash support apps yet, but I'm going to soon.

Regarding the battery life, you can buy one of those external batteries (I suggest the New Trent) which works very well if you're sitting in one place, but not so well (too bulky) if you're on the go. It's great for playing long poker sessions though.

just to clarify, it will stream flash video. skyfire doesn't do everything flash like if you were to play a flash game on skyfire it would not work. however theres plenty of games on the app store, im currently addicted to a golf game.

for me the biggest reasons why i wanted to go with the evo were flash and screen size. after going from a blackberry to this the screen is insanely large to me, if i got/get the evo i feel like it might be overkill but the reasoning behind the big screen and flash was to rock vipbox at the tables to pass time. after seeing that apple now has flash enabling for this the phone becomes a lot more appealing and like i said going from blackberry to iphone is shocking. it's like you finally got a real phone! lol

I'm not familiar with skyfire, but Photon will stream flash.

I did just find a small glitch on Photon. Apparently only one tab can run on flash at once. Therefore I can't play the radio free roll and chat at the same time. I suppose I could chat on my phone and play poker on the iPad.

LG Display announced yesterday that they are manufacturing a 5-inch, full HD LCD panel for smartphones. At 440 ppi and 1920×1080 resolution, this is both the most pixels and highest pixel density of any smartphone display—and the first to be capable of full HDTV quality in a mobile.

The display uses AH-IPS (Advanced High Performance In-Plane Switching) technology as opposed to the current In-Plane Switching technology of the iPhone 4S. According to Tech2, “This new generation of In-Plane Swtiching showcases better colour accuracy, which in turn allows it to reproduce the original colour without any distortion. In addition to this, it provides greater light transmission, which translates to lower power consumption, while delivering exceptional picture quality, thereby making it ideal for use in outdoor settings. It also provides for better viewing angles with more stability.”

“As smartphones become increasingly valued for how well they do multimedia and with the rapid growth of LTE enabling faster large file transfers, our new 5″ Full HD LCD panel is certain to prove a significant asset to the mobile market,” said Sang-Deok Yeo, CTO and Executive Vice President of LG Display. “With the world’s highest resolution smartphone display, LG Display continues to remain a step ahead in developing the most innovative in display technology products.”

The 5-inch Full HD LCD panel from LG Display is expected to release the new panel in the second half of the year, and will debut it in the flesh at SID 2012 Display Week in Boston, on June 4.

Some are already referring to this new 5-inch standard as a “phablet,” and the new form factor would make one hand operation a bit of a challenge. The screen itself measures roughly 4.4 inches by 2.5 inches, or 1.5 inches taller and .5 inches wider than the current iPhone 4s. But the ability to have full HD in your pocket or purse will create all kinds of opportunities for content consumption.

I'm sure Apple will have similar product available....in 2015.
