Not a bad answer from Trump. He doesn't want to enrage Fuentes and his followers further, so he's trying to keep it calm so the anti-Trump sentiment on the right dies down.
Many will probably be unhappy that Trump doesn't openly condemn Fuentes (and Carlson for softballing him), but Trump is in a precarious position now with his own following. If he acts too adversarial toward these influencers, he will lose a lot of the enthusiastic following which propelled him into power in the first place.
I dont know the reason for this, or the mechanics. But Nick Fuentes videos were blowing up my timeline right up until Tucker interviewed him, and now very little. It definitely appears that Tucker taking him in has neutralized him to an extent, which I have heard speculated was the intent. Maybe Nick was given a deal he couldn't refuse.

What are you talking about? They are platforming him. They aren't directly interviewing him (yet), but they are talking and writing about him all the time and trying to make him the face of MAGA, for the exact reason you outlined. And they are making a point to bring up conservative influencers that interview him, to try to tie them to him. I doubt they are under any illusion amplifying Fuentes in this way is going to make people less aware of him. They think they can control the narrative, and use him to turn people off the Republican Party, and maybe you are right and this will backfire. I really dont know.
In the last couple years Dems have generally had success platforming and amplifying the craziest, most offensive parts of the right. But maybe this is a different beast and they are taking on more than they can control. Time will tell I guess.
