I'm having the same debate over on X.

I point out recent left wing authoritarianism -- measures which personally affected me several times, whereas Trump's actions have not.

They either deny it happened (lol), or insist that Trump's is "much worse". They claim that I'm not arguing in good faith to compare the two.

My response is simple.

There is no such thing as supporting "less authoritarianism". You are either okay with authoritarianism, or you're not. The "more "and "less" is subjective, and it's what allows people to cry about authoritarianism when it's the other side doing it, but excuse their own side's actions as necessary and just.

If someone were to say to me, "Trump is acting like an authoritarian today. Many on the left were acting as authoritarians in the early 2020s. Neither are good, and both are dangerous for the country. We disagree on politics, but we should agree to reject any form of authoritarianism from any side", I'd totally agree.

But nobody on the left will say this, no matter what I try to concede about Trump. They will either deny that early 2020s authoritarianism occurred, or they will blame COVID, claiming that quick decisions were required which weren't always correct in hindsight. It's bullshit. The left clearly wanted to censor and punish wrongthink, both about COVID and non-COVID matters. I have a million examples of it.

Furthermore, these same people are whisper quiet about the abhorrent speech-related arrests occurring in the UK, one of our country's biggest allies.

I do not trust yesterday's authoritarians to fight against today's authoritarians. You shouldn't either.
