Massive solar plant at CA/NV state line

I’ve always hated the look of this place as I came down the hill into Primm, NV. I hope this project fails and the solar panels removed.

Maybe they should rename it the Kentucky Fried Bird Roaster since thats what it seems to be best at. Literally immolating birds flying over it nearly instantaneously

    UPDATE-

Good- I always hated this, it ruined the desert and is super ugly. Hope it all gets removed. -DR

Construction began in 2010 and was completed in 2014. Now, it’s set to close in 2026 after failing to efficiently generate solar energy.

$2.2 billion solar plant in California turned off after years of wasted money: ‘Never lived up to its promises’

Seen from the sky, the Ivanpah Solar Power Facility in California’s Mojave Desert resembles a futuristic dream.

Viewed from the bottom line, however, Ivanpah is anything but.

The solar power plant, which features three 459-foot towers and thousands of computer-controlled mirrors known as heliostats, cost some $2.2 billion to build.

Construction began in 2010 and was completed in 2014. Now it’s set to close in 2026 after failing to efficiently generate solar energy.

green energy is the biggest scam, solar, wind and all the other BS... only certain people and companies get rich cause of the Govt. subsidies on our/tax payer dime...

for Christ sake... a solar farm is not efficient in the desert..???!!!!

I forgot to add in the update that multiple sources are stating that birds were getting fried in-flight by the mirrors of this solar system. Good job Obama.

    - Experts claim California solar array is killing nearly 30,000 birds per year
    - Solar plant is the world's largest, but plans for a larger one are underway
    - Proposed new 75-story plant would be located near a huge bird sanctuary
    - Authorities call the smoke trails left by scorched birds 'streamers'

I get that you think being Saudi Arabia's little bitch is a good thing, but beg to differ.

we don't have to be Saudi's bitch, we have more proven oil reserves than them, their oil is just easier to extract... they basically put a straw in the ground and it gushes out... i think we just buy Saudi oil to keep influence in the Middle East.... supposedly one of our "allies".... not like being Israel's bitch for different reasons other than oil...

Me and country978 used to chat about UEC back when it was $3 or something. He was in it. Maybe Tella was on it.

I never foresaw AI and data centers way back then. Like much of my choices I luckboxed into AI. PLTR was the best example. That was just a military industrial play originally. I’m always long war.

I haven’t looked at uranium ideas recently. Now you’re just jumping into momentum and that’s quite different. UEC really tested our patience.

Any reports or rumors that the solar farm will be dismantled? I really hope so.

you're 100% correct and exactly what i was thinking and don't wanna do... maybe some sort of uranium etf...?? let the fund manager who should know where to put the money..? or maybe just tail an ETF with their top 1 to 3 positions... problem with that though is , one would have to check daily what their top 3 holdings are, cause they will and do change frequently... so maybe i should research some Uranium etf's, maybe throw 1k at it... let the hunting begin i guess, i'll try let you guys know if i come up with anything... would like to hear your thoughts if you don't mind on an uranium etf, worth it/not wrth it...?

Whoever wrote the NY Post article has never been to Vegas by car, nor do they know how to operate Google Maps.

You can drive from the solar plant to the Vegas strip and only clock 53 miles, not 65 like the article says. And the average motorist sees it about 48 miles from Vegas, from I-15.

The reason this plant failed was because the complex process they used to generate electricity is antiquated -- something that was okay in 2009 when it was built, but now traditional solar panels using semiconductors (which will go on your roof if you buy solar panels today) are much better.

Funny that they never accounted for the possibility that the future would bring more efficient solar panels.

Anyway, there are still a shitload of solar panels on the ground near the same area off I-15, but they're on the other side of the freeway in a completely different project.

Nearby, there is a much more interesting industrial facility which gets little attention, because visually it doesn't stand out. Just before you go down the mountain on I-15 as you approach the Nevada State Line, there is a small community called "Mountain Pass". It's at 4700 feet elevation, and the freeway offramp is Bailey Road. If you are going north on I-15, a right turn off Bailey will bring you into a desolate no-mans-land mainly used for hiking and offroading, but to the left will bring you to a massive industrial complex, complete with residential facilities.

That facility is the Mountain Pass Rare Earth Mine. What's so special about it? They're mining rare minerals from the earth, from a 1.4-billion-year-old deposit. Almost 16% of all rare earth minerals come from that mine! This includes cerium, lanthanum, neodymium, europium, and others.

Due to the elevation, it sometimes snows there in the winter. If you go the direction on Bailey Road opposite of the mine, you can bring your kids to a decent little natural snowplay area which almost nobody visits.
