Here's my recent IRS story:
They recently made a mistake when processing my return and jacked about $3500 from a refund I was supposed to receive.
I then sent them a response to their action with evidence showing how they were incorrect. Eight months passed. Crickets.
Finally I got a letter from them this summer. I thought it would probably contain a check for the money BACK.
Instead, it was instructing me to "send in any evidence which is relevant" to prove my assertion.
I already sent all of the evidence. Note that they were not asking me for MORE evidence. They were claiming that I sent in a claim with no evidence, and therefore they couldn't process it.
I called up, and after a lot of being transferred around, and a lot of hold time while they researched, I was told that they made an error scanning in my letter. Therefore, the 3 of the 4 pages of evidence I sent were missing, and the 4th one was out of context and they couldn't understand it. Furthermore, the bottom half of the IRS form I submitted was also mis-scanned and missing.
That's not at all what my notice said. The notice acted as if I just didn't sent it in the first place!
I said, "Okay, where can I sent this stuff again so you can get going on it?"
I was told to send it to the same address, and I'd be in the back of the line, as if I never sent anything in the first place.
I was then directed to some in-house taxpayer advocate service, but they were incompetent and basically seemed aimed at those who don't understand taxes and need help. Cases like mine (where I need something expedited because the IRS mis-scanned the info and I fell 8 months behind) simply are not their specialty, and everyone there sounded clueless.
So I just hung up on them and went back to square one, and sent in the stuff again.
