Anyway, it almost happened again. Well, it actually did happen, but then it resolved.

This time it was at Jersey Mike's, not Subway.



I had gone to this location many times, and gotten tomatoes on the side each time without pushback.

Yesterday I ordered my usual sandwich, again with tomatoes on the side.

A new employee responded, "I can't do tomatoes on the side. We can't put things on the side."

I told him that this is definitely allowed, and that I've done it many times this year.

He responded, "All I know is that I was told not to put anything on the side. I'm sorry."

I asked him if this was a matter of packaging. I offered to have them use no additional packaging, and just put the tomato next to the sandwich, and I would repackage it myself to separate them. Again, he repeated that he simply can't put the tomatoes on the side at all.

Memories of the asshole Subway owner came flooding back. Was this yet another mandate from a greedy franchise owner, trying to save money by refusing people to put things on the side which ALREADY COME WITH THE SANDWICH??

I asked him the reason for the refusal. "This comes with tomato, though. I just want that on the side, not extra. It's the same tomato either way."

The guy was flustered and just kept muttering, "But... I'm just not allowed to do it....", when a longtime employee of the store (presumably the acting manager) noticed this. He asked her about the tomato, and she came over to me. I said, "You know I've done this a lot of times with no issue. Is it really true I can't have the tomato on the side anymore? Again, if it's about the packaging, I don't need extra packaging for it."

She replied, "Well, it's not really about.... ummm... Well, you see, the reason we don't allow it is for liability. If you take the side tomato home and don't refrigerate it and forget about it, and then eat it and get sick, you could sue us."



What kind of bullshit excuse was this? Eating a sandwich left out for an extended period of time is MUCH more dangerous than eating a rotten tomato, so what exactly is this policy protecting? Seemed to me she was just making it up on the spot.

"That's okay, I'll sign a waiver promising never to sue you about the tomato. If I do that, will you let me have the tomato on the side?"

Obviously I wasn't being serious here, but was trying to demonstrate the absurdity of her claim.

"Umm... welll... you know what? Just do it. Give him the tomato", she said.



So it had a happy ending.

But what's the real reason for this policy? It couldn't be liability. My guess is that the franchise owner told them to stop doing it (to save money), and she just didn't want to deal with arguing with me.

Just sent back a slice of banana bread for my wife yesterday at a roadside coffee shop where they gave her the end piece with no issues. The cashier was a mean lesbian, imagine the fun you'd have with that.

I asked politely, explained it was dry, did not act entitled, said thanks upon the fix. Pretty foolproof plan to quick resolution.

I offered you a solution that gets you what you need and makes everyone feel good about doing the right thing.

Maybe start with a SpongeBob Squarepants helmet so it's plain as day and work.your way up to standard Schwinn.

Always ask what type of condiment we went just spot on and the food is better I believe Wendys sometimes fucks up my order never at chipfilets.

Every time I post a bad customer service story where the other side was clearly in the wrong, you respond with some unrelated anecdote where you were the highly respected store counter hero and everyone walked away a better person.

Recall that I was encountering a kid who was clearly told not to give anyone stuff on the side. This wasn't just aimed at me, nor was the kid being uncooperative because I wasn't being friendly enough. He was afraid to do it because he might lose his job if he blatantly disregarded the rules.

All of the Sloppy Joe Hot Air in the world (well, whatever is left of the hot air since the COVID lungs) wouldn't have changed that.

The situation only resolved itself because the manager saw I wasn't buying her BS excuse, so she just gave up and told him to let me have it.

I realize that critical thinking is not your forte, but at least give it a shot sometime.

It's Chik Fil'A (I don't blame you for getting that wrong), but I only partially agree here.

For awhile from 2021-23, they were routinely fucking up simple things on my order. This was somewhat related to the worker shortage, but also somewhat due to them rushing people through the line and not paying attention, at least at the store by me.

It finally improved about 2 years ago, but there's still sometimes mistakes, so I always check before I leave the drive-thru.

In-N-Out has mostly returned to the high standard they had before (though not quite as good as pre-COVID).

Wendy's is hit and miss.

I had a similarly bizarre situation a couple years ago. We stayed at a hotel in Florida and my son wanted a burger. So there was a strip center across the street, and it had a Mom and Pop burger place where you go to the counter to order. Anyway we go to the counter and place the order for my son to what appeared to be the owner, simply ordered a kids burger meal. Then I am like I am actually pretty hungry myself but given it was 2pm and we has steakhouse reservations at 7pm, I just did not want to order the adult version which was a half pounder. The kids version from the picture looked to be like a regular McDonalds burger, which is the size I wanted. I remember is was $5.99 for the kids meal.

So I said actually make that 2 kids burger meals, and he promptly asked me if I had another child coming in, I was like no its just me and my son. He said sternly I don't sell kids meals to adults, I then sternly responded back I was not trying to scam your place, I just have hotel steakhouse reservations in 5 hours and don't want to eat a half pound burger at 2pm. He then explained to me he barely makes any money on kids meals and he can't have a bunch of adults coming in ordering kids meals.

Naturally, I was pissed and I said it sounds like then you need to raise the kids meal prices, problem solved. He got further shitty about his policy and I said fine we will leave. Just understand everyone loses here, you miss out of $12, your cook misses out on $5 because I definitely would have put $5 in the tip jar, and my son misses out on a burger. What an ass clown. It did not matter, we walked a block away to a Chilis and simply split a burger and fries for $10. It's no secret most Mom and Pops go out of business within 5 years, because they generally don't think big picture on how to retain customer loyalty. I mean unless its a unlikely situation like mine, very very few adults are walking into places ordering kids meals.
