This is tied for 6th in earthquakes in magnitude, since they were measured.

    1960 Chlie 9.5
    1964 Alaska 9.3
2004 Indonesia 9.2 (responsible for the deadly tsunami there)
    2011 Japan 9.1
    1952 Russia 9.0
    1906 Colombia 8.8
    2010 Chile 8.8
    2025 Russia 8.8

Both Russian quakes (1952 and today) were in the same area.

The deadliest of those above, by a wide margin, was the 2004 Indonesia quake, due to the tsunami. That killed well over 200,000 people.

There is massive traffic in Hawaii right now due to people fleeing low-lying areas.

Hawaii is under a "tsnuami warning", which is the highest of the 3 tsunami alerts. The lowest level is "tsunami watch", and the middle is "tsunami advisory".

The US west coast is under a tsunami advisory, but I doubt there will be any significant tsunami action on the US mainland. If it does occur, it will be around midnight-1am. I am not that far from the ocean, but I'm at a high enough elevation to where it is impossible for this to affect me. I've had to calm down some local people who have nervously texted me.

There is a fair chance that there will be a real tsunami in Hawaii, but note that the first tsunami waves hitting Japan have been extremely underwhelming -- about 10-15% the height expected. This might indicate that there will be no tsunamis at all further east like the US.

Except potential looting, related scams and other shenanigans.

NZ Civil Defense is monitoring the NZ situation, it will hit us in around 9-11 hours and potentially 30cm to 1 metre which is currently not likely to be a problem.
For the 1965 Chile earthquake, people were told not to go to the beaches, so naturally a lot of halfwits went to the beaches to see the waves come in.

I have to admit, I am one of the halfwits who kind of wants to go somewhere to observe it at midnight, but the problem is that I'd have to get dangerously close in order to see anything, and if nothing happens (which is likely), then I've wasted my time anyway.

    So no point.

Hard to tell if there will be much to see at night.

There will probably be a lot of drone footage if relevant and maybe news footage if they think they can get it safely.

As you have said though, its probably going to be underwhelming.

    Updates for California:

It is now seen as likely that some form of a tsunami will hit Crescent City (very northern California). There was some moderate damage in 2011 from the Japan quake in Crescent City.

San Luis Obispo, in central CA, could also have a small tsunami.

LA is expected to have 1 foot waves, which are meaningless unless the water reaches past the beach.

    Hawaii is still in danger.

    Looks like a nothingburger.

CNN has pivoted from "OMG tsunami" to "OMG look at the damage in Russia".

I guess a five foot wave was seen in Hawaii, but we're not even getting any reports of major damage.

As I predicted, we're just too far away to really see a major impact.
