Her husband, Dennis Troper, made the announcement earlier this evening:
It is with profound sadness that I share the news of Susan Wojcicki passing. My beloved wife of 26 years and mother to our five children left us today after 2 years of living with non-small cell lung cancer. Susan was not just my best friend and partner in life, but a brilliant mind, a loving mother, and a dear friend to many. Her impact on our family and the world was immeasurable. We are heartbroken, but grateful for the time we had with her. Please keep our family in your thoughts as we navigate this difficult time.
Susan Wojcicki joined Google in 1999 as its 16th employee and first marketing manager. Larry Page and Sergey Brin famously started the company in the Wojcicki garage. Her sister Anne Wojcicki is co-founder and CEO of 23andMe.
Wojcicki co-created Image Search, oversaw advertising, and recommended the acquisition of YouTube. In February of 2014, she became CEO of the video site.
In February of 2023, Wojcicki left the role to focus on “family, health and personal projects,” while remaining in an advisory role to “offer counsel and guidance across Google and the portfolio of Alphabet companies.” (Neal Mohan, previously Chief Product Officer, took on the role.)
