Off topic, and I've talked about it before, but I was reminded of it by all this 2000s poker high school student talk.

I was playing a ton on Absolute Poker in 2007, mostly 40-80 limit holdem, under an account named ALECTRO. Nobody knew for a long time that ALECTRO was me, until shortly before the cheating scandal there, at which point I quit anyway. I developed a brash, loud personality for ALECTRO which was designed to make it fun for fish to play with me, and it worked like a charm. I was also very aggro play-wise, so the fish just saw me as a degenerate gambler like them, and they enjoyed getting into battles with me. I took over 300k off that game in 5 months, erasing a horrible start I had to the year at higher stakes elsewhere.

Anyway, they allowed railbirds to chat in those days, so there were a lot of them watching the 40-80. By their demeanor and the fact that they repeatedly begged for $10, they were probably young, but I didn't really think about that. At first I found their presence annoying, but some of them became fans of the ALECTRO persona, and would watch for hours at a time, cheering for me in the chat, and most never asked for money because I had a no-money-for-beggars policy.

After like a 10-hour session, the most loyal ALECTRO fan asked if I could make an exception and send him $10, since he was there the entire time cheering for me. I said yes and sent him the 10 bucks. Then I realized that I had been making a mistake being so cheap.

I started sending $10 to a lot more people than just him. I didn't ask for anything in return, but it organically created a cheering section, as these people got conditioned to notice that I would send $10 at the end of sessions to those that had been cheering for me for awhile.

Why did I do this? Did I really need reassuring by random railbirds?

No. I came to realize that this created a real home field advantage type situation, where these guys would cheer for me and mock my opponents, and it had a legit effect, tilting the opponents into playing worse. So it was very much worth it to break off $10 here and there for these guys. I never asked who they were or how old they were. Decent chance some of them were underage, but whatever. I didn't really think about it at the time. To me they were just faceless accounts cheering for me, and tilting opponents.
