Maybe he was staked for more events than just the main, and it was a package deal.

if he was staked it most likely due to an arrangement for the entire WSOP that he honored even though he won enough to buy in on his own

Big difference between a couple of guys having tiny pieces and being fully staked for almost all the buy in.

There was no reason whatsoever for Merson to sell off big pieces or need a stake, probably just sold off small pieces to a few close friends.

This wasn't some random donk he was an accomplished player with plenty of money.
