The NBA did what they did with a rookie commissioner who was hearing a lot of backlash demanding he came down hard. It was a tough spot and certainly a slippery slope to make this ban off private tapes BUT apparently TMZ says in one recording that wasn't released that Sterling is well aware he is being recorded too.
The thing is the NBA may have actually done Sterling a favor if he takes the advice to sell this team because the sooner the better for him in regards to getting the most he probably can now that his reputation is destroyed.
If the NBA didn't do anything it would create a ton of negative publicity for them but lets not even think about that for a minute if Sterling was able to still do things business as usual with nothing done to him then the Clippers would never regain sponsorships, people would stop coming to the games, players wouldn't want to be there anymore,etc... It may have been fun to see the crash and burn of Sterling from that aspect except when I think about not just the players on the team but all the people who work at the stadium employed the decrease in customers and revenues just trickles down to them.
Anyone who buys this team (assuming the old fuck don't fight selling it) will lowball the shit out of Sterling and once they get a new owner in who is respectable you can bet all these sponsors will line right back up to take part again.
